The 2024 Solheim Cup provided an enthralling three days of action as the USA and Europe battled it out at Robert Trent Jones Golf Club in Virginia.
Stacey Lewis’ United States side regained the famous trophy despite an impressive comeback from the European team during Sunday’s singles. Charley Hull produced the performance of the weekend, dismantling Nelly Korda 6&4; thankfully, Korda sent Hull a humorous message on Instagram after her defeat.
Lilia Vu produced the winning moment for the USA after halving her match with Albane Valenzuela on the 18th.
The Solheim Cup drama provided thrilling drama over the weekend, but YouTube golf sensation Rick Shiels has an issue with the BBC’s coverage.
Rick Shiels slams BBC Solheim Cup highlights package

The Solheim Cup was shown exclusively on Sky Sports over the weekend, and those with subscriptions in the United Kingdom could watch the action.
Then, later in the evening, the BBC aired a highlights package. Shiels, speaking on the latest Rick Shiels Golf Show, claimed the time the highlights were broadcast made no sense.
“I have a gripe with the BBC,” Shiels explained. “The Solheim Cup was on Sky Sports, behind a paywall, that not everyone in the world gets. The highlights were on about 10 o’clock, and it said Solheim Cup final day highlights coming next, after the Best Man film.
“This was ten o’clock. The film was released in 1999, and the highlights of the Solheim Cup started at 11:55 pm. That’s bad, isn’t it? That film has been out for 25 years; I’m pretty confident that film has been shown on BBC Two ten times over the last 25 years. Why was the Solheim Cup highlights not go out at 10 pm and then put the film on afterwards? It makes no sense. I was really disappointed with that.”
Ryder Cup and Solheim Cup should be free to watch in the United Kingdom
Huge global events such as the Solheim Cup and Ryder Cup should be free for those in the United Kingdom to watch.
Unfortunately, the emergence of subscription-based services, along with organisers becoming more commercially inclined, has led to some of golf’s most iconic events moving away from the masses.
The Open Championship, for example, was a staple of the BBC’s golf coverage. However, Sky took control at the 2016 championship after the BBC focussed its attention elsewhere.
Sky’s coverage cannot be knocked, however. The 2024 Open at Royal Troon was brilliantly broadcast, producing excellent and insightful coverage throughout. It’s just a shame it’s behind a fairly significant paywall.
