Rich Beem tells Rory McIlroy what he really needs to do in training after a disappointing Tour Championship

Rory McIlroy ended up finishing ninth in his final PGA Tour start of the season as he rounded off an inconsistent 2024.

McIlroy once again failed to win that fifth major and golf fans won’t forget his final hole meltdown at the US Open to hand it to Bryson DeChambeau.

However, there have been good moments for McIlroy as well.

McIlroy won the Wells Fargo as an individual while he picked up a memorable win with good friend Shane Lowry at The Zurich as well.

He also finished second at the US Open, 12th at the PGA, and came within a whisker of a medal at the Olympics.

Still, there’s always room for improvement with Rory McIlroy and speaking about his game, former major winner Rich Beem has called for his wedge game to improve.

Speaking on Sky Sports last night after seeing McIlroy finish ninth at East Lake, Beem conceded that McIlroy wasn’t at his sharpest this season and that the wedges can be worked on.

“We’ll see him next at is the Irish Open, then the BMW PGA and then the Dunhill Links after that. I think there are certainly things he needs to work on in the off season, whenever that might come,” Beem said.

“It’s not going to be a huge off season for him I’m assuming but he needs to get out there and sit there with a Trackman and just see what we can do with those wedges, to get them a bit more dialled in.

“If he can get back to that position where he was a few years ago, he drives it so good, he just has to give himself a few feet better looks each time he has a wedge into some of these greens.

“He just wasn’t that sharp this season.”

What next for Rory McIlroy?

Justin Rose has predicted McIlroy to come back fighting in 2025 and you really wouldn’t put it past him either.

Clearly, there have been some frustrations for McIlroy this year both on and off the course and it was only a week ago that McIlroy was being mocked by fans for throwing his club at the BMW.

Still, as Rose suggests, McIlroy is too good of a player to write off and he will no doubt have some big highs next season as well.

Will he win a major? We simply don’t know. But McIlroy will always be in contention and as ever, remains one of the very biggest names in sport in general.
