Tommy Fleetwood is in contention to win the first PGA Tour event of his career, as he sits tied for the lead alongside Patrick Cantlay at the Tour Championship.

Fleetwood carded a round of three-under par 67 on day three of the Tour Championship at East Lake, as he looks to record his first PGA Tour win in his 164th start.

The 34-year-old Englishman proved that he is seriously strong mentally after he followed his double bogey on the 15th hole with back-to-back birdies on 16 and 17.

On Friday, Fleetwood admitted he’s been shocked by the low scoring at the Tour Championship so far this week.

The seven-time DP World Tour winner has been in exemplary form during his first three rounds, now he just has to finish the job off on Sunday.

US Ryder Cup captain Keegan Bradley raved about Fleetwood’s mentality earlier this week, and he will have to be in the zone during the final round if he is to get the better of Patrick Cantlay and those tucked in behind, including world number one Scottie Scheffler.

After the third round, Rich Beem said what he believes will happen to the Englishman at East Lake on Sunday.

So many people are pulling for Fleetwood to get the job done at East Lake.

Beem was speaking on Sky Sports in the UK after day three at the Tour Championship.

And he was asked whether he believes Fleetwood can finally break his duck by winning in America on the PGA Tour.

Beem replied: One thing stands out to me and was going through my mind over and over again. When we saw him at the Travelers Championship on Saturday he had come off a nearly perfect round, only missed one fairway, hit 16 out of 18 greens and couldn’t replicate that on Sunday.

Same thing on FedEx. He missed one fairway on Saturday and then came out and put too much pressure on the front nine and just couldn’t get into the rhythm he was in on both Saturdays.

He was not quite on today and I was happy about that because I think he did not bring his best so he knows he can be better tomorrow, which I believe he will be.

I believe he will shoot something less than a 67 and put himself in prime position to win this championship. I really think he’s going to get it done after what I saw today.

Beem followed Fleetwood around during the third round, so if anyone is in a position to comment on his chances of winning, it’s the 2002 PGA champion.

Fleetwood is in a great position to chalk up his first PGA Tour win but as we all know, nothing is guaranteed when it comes to the Englishman trying to get over the line in America.

Tommy Fleetwood’s stats through three rounds of the Tour Championship

Fleetwood’s time will come soon, there is no doubt about that.

He continues to play wonderfully consistent golf and now he just needs a couple of lucky breaks to help him get over the line.

Here are his stats from the third round on Saturday:

StatsFleetwood’s rank
Strokes gained off the tee10
Strokes gained approach12
Strokes gained around the green15
Strokes gained putting1
Strokes gained totalT-1

Those stats prove just how important putting is. He has been solid in all of the other categories, but his exceptional putting is the reason why he is tied for the lead right now.

If Fleetwood continues to perform well on the greens on day four of the Tour Championship, he may well finally get his first win on the PGA Tour.
