Rex Hoggard has named the one player who may stand any chance of joining Scottie Scheffler in the conversation for the PGA Tour Player of the Year for 2024.

Scottie Scheffler appears to already have one hand on the FedEx Cup after securing his sixth win of the season at the Travelers Championship. He became the first player since Arnold Palmer in 1962 to win six times before the end of June.

Scheffler is actually on more points in the FedEx Cup race than Xander Schauffele and Rory McIlroy combined, and he, of course, clinched The Masters title earlier in the year.

So you would imagine that the world number one is nailed on to be voted the PGA Tour Player of the Year, but perhaps there is one name who has the smallest chance of throwing a spanner in the works.

The one player who could rival Scottie Scheffler for PGA Tour Player of the Year

No-one has been more impressive in the major championships than Bryson DeChambeau this season, with the LIV Golf star winning the US Open, coming second at the PGA Championship and finishing inside the top six at Augusta National.

Speaking on Golf Channel, Hoggard believes that a win for DeChambeau at Royal Troon is the only thing which can stop Scheffler winning the vote.

“There’s absolutely no way of doing this, that being said, I do think there could possibly be a conversation if, and only if, Bryson DeChambeau were able to win The Open Championship in a few weeks when we get to Royal Troon,” he said.

“That would give him two major championships versus one major championship for Scottie Scheffler. Scottie also has the Players Championship, so at that point, it becomes a bit of a conversation about quality over quantity, certainly Bryson’s not going to be able to match up with what Scottie has done on the PGA Tour.

“And it’s really important to point out that this is a membership vote, so even if Bryson were to win The Open Championship, I wouldn’t imagine that that would sway too many votes, but at least, I think it would become a conversation.”

Bryson DeChambeau is no longer a member, but US Open adds to his number of PGA Tour wins

It would be interesting to see whether DeChambeau is at all eligible to win the PGA Tour Player of the Year because he is obviously no longer a member of the tour after his move to LIV Golf.

That would presumably rule him out, however, his US Open triumph adds to his tally of PGA Tour wins, as would The Open if he came out on top there.

It would be incredibly controversial for DeChambeau to win a vote ahead of Scheffler, who appears to make history every time he tees it up at the moment. But a second major title of the year for DeChambeau would create an interesting situation.
