Even Scottie Scheffler could not have imagined before the start of the year that he would reach the halfway point in 2024 having doubled his number of PGA Tour wins in his career.

Scottie Scheffler is enjoying the kind of dominance which is inevitably going to see the world number one compared with the very best to have ever played the game.

In fact, Scheffler has now done something Tiger Woods never actually achieved, having won six times on the PGA Tour before the end of June, with his sixth triumph coming at the Travelers Championship over the weekend.

Scheffler went into the week with a bit of a point to prove after his disappointing showing at the US Open, with the 27-year-old well out of contention at Pinehurst.

FedEx Cup standings highlight how dominant Scottie Scheffler has been

But he returned with another win in Connecticut, further confirming that he is, by some distance, the best player on the PGA Tour this season.

In fact, it is remarkable just how far ahead he is of the chasing pack, with Rex Hoggard telling the Golf Channel Podcast that he was amazed by how isolated Scheffler is at the top of the FedEx Cup standings.

“With Scottie Scheffler, we have that dominant player, there’s no two ways around it. They’re in the stats, the one that stood out to me, they said it on the telecast was he has earned – and I never go back to FedEx Cup points, especially at this point in the season – but he’s earned more FedEx Cup points than number two and number three on the list combined, and I believe that’s Xander and Rory McIlroy,” he said.

The potentially bad news ahead of the Tour Championship

Before 2019, Scheffler’s performance in the regular season would have been even more significant as the points continued to matter throughout the play-offs.

However, the new format means that Scheffler seems to be almost guaranteed to start the Tour Championship at -10, two shots clear of his nearest rivals. That almost seems to be unfair on him given how impressive he has been.

In fairness, the rest of the field will be worried enough with Scheffler having a lead of at least two shots at East Lake. But that does not come close to telling the full story of how dominant he has been.
