Rex Hoggard claims LIV Golf players could be annoyed by what the league has done just before the PGA Championship starts

There were mixed results for LIV Golf players at The Masters, with Bryson DeChambeau enduring a frustrating final day at Augusta National when he was given a golden chance to win.

Once again, plenty of focus was on LIV Golf‘s players heading into The Masters. The game is still working out just how much of an impact playing in the league has on a player’s performance in the four biggest events of the year.

There were definitely some success stories at Augusta National. Both Patrick Reed and Bryson DeChambeau finished in the top five. DeChambeau led at one stage early on in the final round. But there were also some disappointing results, with Dustin Johnson and Sergio Garcia amongst those to miss the cut.

LIV Golf definitely needs to produce a first time major champion sooner rather than later. So far, only Brooks Koepka and DeChambeau have won majors since leaving the PGA Tour.

LIV Golf players may not be best pleased with the league ahead of the PGA Championship

But perhaps their chances of glory at the PGA Championship have not been helped by their own league.

LIV’s final event before Quail Hollow took place in Korea this past week, with DeChambeau winning. Jack Nicklaus Golf Club provided an impressive stage for the event, and it was an exciting finish, with Crushers teammate Charles Howell III giving his captain a run for his money.

However, speaking on the Golf Channel, Rex Hoggard suggested that playing in Incheon cannot have been the ideal preparation for any of those playing in the second major of the year.

“I’d certainly think it doesn’t help when you look at everything they’ve had to go through from a travel perspective. You go back to The Masters and you thought playing the week before in Miami was going to be a really good tune up. It gave these players an opportunity to play a PGA Tour calibre golf course in the eastern time zone, you were just a short flight away from Augusta,” he said.

“And you went from that to where we are right now, you’re right, I think Brooks Koepka said it takes him about a week to recover from going overseas, specifically to Asia, your body doesn’t feel right. So he’s going to show up at the PGA Championship probably still groggy a little bit. I keep going back to the idea that the LIV players argued to play more before the major championships, I don’t think this is what they had in mind though.”

The LIV Golf stars currently set to be involved in the PGA Championship

The PGA Championship is still putting together the field for this month. But based on last year’s qualification criteria and some of the invites already handed out, it appears that the number of LIV players in the field will reach double figures.

Brooks Koepka, Martin Kaymer and Phil Mickelson are set to be involved as past champions, while Jon Rahm, Cam Smith and Bryson DeChambeau have won majors in the last few years.

Sergio Garcia, Joaquin Niemann, David Puig and Tom McKibbin have all reportedly received invites from the PGA of America, while Dean Burmester should be in off the back of his top 15 finish last year. Richard Bland qualifies after winning the Senior PGA Championship, while Tyrrell Hatton was a member of the European Ryder Cup team in 2023.

John Catlin is a reserve on LIV this season, but does currently lead the Federation Ranking which provided three spots 12 months ago.
