Golf YouTube sensation Rick Shiels has been giving some constructive criticism to LIV Golf after watching the action this weekend.

LIV had one of its most successful weekends yet as Joaquin Niemann shot a stunning 59 before competing with Sergio Garcia in a playoff. Then, in the team even, new signing Jon Rahm led his Legion XII team to the first team title of the season.

However, while LIV might have enjoyed success in terms of eyes on the product, YouTube star Shiels believes there’s so much more they can do to improve.

Rick Shiels shares what was ‘terrible’ about watching LIV Golf

Speaking on his Rick Shiels Golf Show, the internet favourite pointed out some criticism in the direction of the LIV commentary team.

“This is not directed at any particular commentator but I think the comms is terrible. I’m not saying I can do a better job, I’m not. It just seems really fake. Just seems a bit fake, a little bit not natural. These guys are professionals don’t get me wrong. I just don’t think they’re the strongest presenters for what now is this new futuristic golf event, sorry. I don’t think I can do better, but  I don’t think they’re the best,” Shiels said.

It must be said, Shiels did make more than one point here about insisting he could not do much better.

However, he was scathing in his criticism of the commentators here and it will be interesting to see if those comments resonate anywhere.

LIV has so far to go

Shiels covers a lot of the negatives in this interview – and in fairness he does bring up some positives – but LIV Golf has a long way to go really.

The PGA and even the DP World Tour have elements of their coverage nailed down and the experience they have shines through.

LIV are obviously trying to push the envelope with a bit of a different take on the game right now. But in the main, it’s just not hitting home as LIV might have hoped.

Now in its third season, LIV will need to develop quickly and hope that things improve.

A scathing review from someone as popular in the golfing world as Shiels, then, is not what they want to hear.
