Phil Mickelson has taken to social media to comment on David Puig winning the Australian PGA Championship on Sunday, and made a big claim about the Spaniard’s potential.
David Puig has made the dream start to life as a full member of the DP World Tour. The 23-year-old has won the Australian PGA Championship by two shots at Royal Queensland.

Puig went into the final round tied for the lead in Brisbane. However, a superb 66 on Sunday ensured that he has his third victory as a professional, with two previous wins on the Asian Tour.
And his victory has not gone unnoticed by Phil Mickelson.

Mickelson will have seen plenty of Puig over the last few years. And while the youngster is yet to win on LIV Golf, he has certainly managed to make a big impression on the six-time major champion.
Puig has become the first Spaniard to win the Australian PGA since Seve Ballesteros back in 1981 – two decades before the Fireballs man was even born.
Mickelson has previously credited Ballesteros as his main inspiration. That makes what the Hy-Flyers captain said on social media all the more remarkable as he claimed that Puig is destined for greatness.

Of course, Mickelson is no stranger to making an outlandish claim on social media. And Puig may not thank him for putting his short game on the same level as Ballesteros at this stage of his career.
Mickelson’s 2025 season may ultimately be best remembered for a prediction he made concerning the world number one, Scottie Scheffler.
Scheffler made a slow start to the season after missing a few weeks with a hand injury. And that prompted Mickelson to predict that Scheffler will not win before the Ryder Cup.
Obviously, he was made to look completely foolish, with Scheffler winning six times. That run included victories at both the PGA Championship and The Open Championship. Like Mickelson, Scheffler is now just a US Open triumph away from completing the Career Grand Slam.
With that, Puig will be hoping that Mickelson is not made to look anywhere near as silly with his latest comments.
