Patrick Cantlay was the subject of more slow play accusations at the Tour Championship this weekend and now Phil Mickelson has dipped into the issue.
Golf fans hammered Cantlay for being so slow as he made his way around with Tommy Fleetwood before falling short of the Englishman, who finally got his first win on the PGA Tour.
Nevertheless, the issue of pace of play has continued to rear its head all weekend and even the LIV Golf side of things had issues.
Brooks Koepka was accused of purposely getting put on the clock in what was a surprise accusation at the LIV Michigan event.
Now, though, another LIV star, Phil Mickelson, has weighed in with what appears to be a cheeky dig – albeit in jest – at Patrick Cantlay.

Phil Mickelson weighs in on Patrick Cantlay’s slow play issue
Cantlay has always been one of the slower players on the PGA Tour and it was little surprise to see him try and put Fleetwood off in a way by being so slow.
Still, while it’s frustrating for the average golf fan, Phil Mickelson has now made light of things as he pointed out the amount of shuffles Cantlay managed before teeing off.
“He shuffled his right foot 26 times. 26 TIMES before he hit it. 26 x 36 other shots is 936 foot shuffles. That’s more calf raises than I’ll ever do. You also must be in peak physical condition to do this daily so let’s stop all the hate and appreciate that golfers are athletes.”
Mickelson’s joke is fine but Patrick Cantlay’s slow play is infuriating for the golf fan
While this is a good post from Mickelson and shows the lighter side of the game, it does also beg the question of why Cantlay continues to get away with it.
Going forward, the PGA Tour need to get a grip on this and not forget that their fans matter.
Watching Cantlay over the weekend was painful at times and if he continues to be given leeway and get away with things, he’ll never change.
Sure, Cantlay isn’t the only one who has issues with pace of play in golf.
But after this weekend, it’s abundantly clear that he remains one of the worst offenders.
