Phil Mickelson will be eager to put his recent major championship misery behind him at The Open this week.

Royal Troon Golf Club hosts the 152nd Open, with LIV Golf stars able to compete on the PGA Tour sanctioned event.

Mickelson is one such player, but the American veteran has struggled in the three other majors of the season.

The 54-year-old finished T43 at the Masters, but missed the cut at both the PGA Championship and the US Open.

His fellow LIV professional and compatriot Bryson DeChambeau was victorious at the US Open, edging out Rory McIlroy by one shot.

The two could be in contention once more at The Open Championship, with DeChambeau hoping to have another battle with McIlroy at Troon.

Mickelson does, however, appear to have bad news for the big-hitting duo due to the nature of the links course.

“I think it’s a golf course that tests complete aspects of a player’s game,” said Mickelson, as per The R&A.

“Control of a golf ball, short game, putting. All the aspects which are important. But one of the areas which I don’t think is as critical here is length or power.

“I think precision is more important. So it makes it for a more complete test and doesn’t isolate it to just a few guys who can win who can hit the further.”

How will Rory McIlroy and Bryson DeChambeau do at The Open?

Royal Troon should test every player over the coming days, with the course certainly going to present challenges that many are not used to.

The Scottish course last hosted The Open in 2016, with Troon boasting ‘one of the scariest holes in the world’.

McIlroy will be desperate to get off to a strong start, with the Northern Irishman perhaps going to react one of two ways after his US Open nightmare.

The world number two could either shine or struggle in the opening stages, with his mental approach perhaps just as important as his efforts with the club.

DeChambeau meanwhile should be on top of the world after his recent major success, but both he and McIlroy may find that hitting big won’t always be the best approach at Troon.
