Predictions

The Golfing Gazette writers predict who they think will walk away with The Open title and grand cash prize:

Sam Stone: “This will be seen as a left-field prediction, but there’s no reason why it should be. Englishman Aaron Rai has been in fine form of late. The Wolverhampton native came close in recent weeks and is playing some of the best golf of his career.

“After his T4 finish at last week’s Scottish Open, Rai has proven himself in links conditions, and he’s definitely one to watch this week.”

Peter Lynch: “Ludvig Aberg certainly has a point to prove after falling away at the Scottish Open last week, having shone in the early rounds at The Renaissance Club. He also missed the cut at the PGA Championship, but remains a real threat to his fellow professionals, particularly in links golf.

“The Swede now has a fantastic chance of winning his first major at Troon, having only just missed out on the Masters title earlier this year.”

Jordan Harris: “While I am desperate to see a Rory McIlroy win this week, the consistency of Xander Schauffele sees the PGA Champion get the pick to win the final major of the year.

“He finished second at Carnoustie in 2018 when he had a phenomenal chance to win, and he has never missed the cut at The Open.”
