As the PGA Tour season draws to a close, the Presidents Cup will soon take centre stage as some of the USA’s best players get set to take on Mike Weir’s men in Montreal.

Royal Montreal Golf Club will stage the event at the end of September, and both teams will soon be finalised.

The top six USA and international players earn automatic qualification, and each captain is allowed six more picks.

The current Presidents Cup standings mean the likes of Scottie Scheffler, Xander Schauffele, and Collin Morikawa will be on the US team. As for the International team, Hideki Matsuyama and Tom Kim are the headline names.

Nick Dunlap is one player who isn’t in the USA’s top 15. However, golf commentator Smylie Kaufman has backed the American to make the 2024 team.

“Talking about the Presidents Cup, look out. I have this weird feeling that if Nick goes on a run, makes the Tour Championship and finds himself inside the top ten at the end of the year, I think he gets picked,” Kaufman said on the latest edition of the Smylie Show.

“I think there’s a good chance Nick Dunlap ends up in the Presidents Cup.”

Nick Dunlap shines at the St Jude Championship

Dunlap finished tied-fifth at the St Jude Championship to punch his way into the BMW Championship, which is underway in Denver this week.

The 20-year-old, however, is 48th in the FedEx Cup standings and will need to continue his form to make the Tour Championship.

If Dunlap can somehow get to East Lake, he stands an excellent chance of making it onto the team. Even if he can’t breach the top six, he will undoubtedly give Jim Furyk something to think about ahead of the historic match-play event.
