The latest event on the FedEx Cup Fall has now finished, with Matt McCarty winning the Black Desert Championship.

McCarty won by three shots on just his second PGA Tour start as a member, conquering the lava field in Utah.

The American finished on 23 under at the Black Desert Championship, which came under fire after Jay Don Blake’s sponsor exemption.

Black Desert’s greens were also under the spotlight before the competition started, but McCarty had few issues in his fantastic victory.

Having won three times on the Korn Ferry Tour, where he started the year, he led by two going into the final round.

Smylie Kaufman suggests ‘really cool’ PGA Tour rule change

McCarty did have to fight off Stephan Jaeger on the back nine on Sunday, but did that expertly to clinch his first PGA Tour win.

He is now headed to the Masters, but Smylie Kaufman has suggested a change to the PGA Tour after the conclusion of the Black Desert Championship

“This is where I have settled in,” he said on The Smylie Show. “I think if you had going into the Korn Ferry season knowing what they are playing for. So first spot you have all these exemptions which give the Players Championship and the US Open.

“Let’s say that going in to the year they had one extra thing to play for. That is if you get into the top 10 of the Korn Ferry Tour list, that will exempt you into the FedEx Cup Fall. Now you will not be able to accumulate any points but it would give you an opportunity to be playing for more money and status.

“What did we see this week? Matt McCarty wins the golf tournament, gets status, made a whole bunch of money and now we all know who he is. It’s a win, win, win. We are starting to introduce some of the top players off the Korn Ferry Tour.

“So the one way in which how do we get these players into these players into the signature events as they are not eligible to compete in the next 10, because they are not accumulating FedEx Cup points like these players did all season, make it a straight battle for these 10 guys and one spot gets in to maybe the first two signature events.

“You have got a totally different storyline to follow, you have 10 new guys playing the entire fall and then they are also battling for what would be signature events, whether that’s after the Sentry and it being Riviera and Pebble, I think that would be really cool.”

Matt McCarty follows in Jason Gore’s footsteps after Black Desert Championship win

McCarty can be extremely proud of his efforts, having impressively battled his way to success at the Black Desert Championship.

The competition represented a big change from the PGA Tour, having returned to Utah for the first time in over 60 years.

But Kaufman wants to see further change from the tour, although it remains to be seen how willing they would be to switch up the rules at this point.

For now, all McCarty can do is celebrate his success, and of course look forward to a huge year next time out.

Having already earned a US Open place by leading the Korn Ferry Tour points list, he has secured Masters and PGA Championship spots with his Utah success.

The American has now become the first player since Jason Gore to clinch three developmental tour victories to earn instant promotion before winning on the PGA Tour in the same season.
