Jay Monahan confirmed in his end-of-year message that the PGA Tour is actively seeking a new CEO. However, it’s not the announcement golf fans were after.

Monahan has faced increasing fan fury in recent months after it was revealed the 54-year-old made over $20m during 2024.

The commissioner has been involved in the protracted negotiations with Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund and recently played alongside Yasir Al-Rumayyan at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship.

With 18 months now passed since the bombshell framework agreement, fans, players, and commentators are growing justifiably frustrated with Monahan’s handling of the situation.

After Monahan’s latest message emerged online, many golf fans were hopeful the video would confirm the American’s resignation as commissioner.

“He must resign,” wrote this fan. While another said: “Did he just resign without saying he’s resigning? I’m confused.”

“Jay Monahan has lost all credibility. The fact that he is still the commissioner of the PGAT is baffling. He should be fired immediately,” one said.

Another added: “Monahan’s resignation on the table is what’s needed.”

“Was hoping it was a resignation message,” said a fellow X user.

Finally, this fan’s message was clear: “Our message to him: resign.”

What’s the latest with the PGA Tour and PIF?

Monahan could quell fan fury by finding a quickfire resolution with the Saudis.

The PGA Tour commissioner has previously claimed talks are positive, but the regurgitated spiel is becoming tiresome for golf fans worldwide.

Currently, Monahan is reluctant to commit to a firm deadline nearly a year from the December 31 target set in 2023.

It’s not just fans who have grown frustrated. Some of the game’s most prominent players have now taken matters into their own hands.

Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy’s recent one-off match against Bryson DeChambeau and Brooks Koepka was a clear powerplay. The game’s best players want a resolution sooner rather than later.
