The Myrtle Beach qualifier has been one of the major talking points in the golf world over the last few weeks.

16 golfers, some amateurs and some from the land of YouTube and social media, were invited over to Myrtle Beach for the chance to qualify for an actual PGA Tour event at The Myrtle Beach Classic in April.

The call from the tour to offer up a place to ‘YouTubers’ has naturally brought some controversy with it.

There are those in the game who feel it’s a bit of a gimmick. However, with LIV taking eyeballs off the PGA Tour, it’s also been praised by some as a smart move from tour chiefs.

Peter Finch among YouTubers to take part in Myrtle Beach Qualifier

One of the players to make the trip over and try and qualify was UK YouTuber, Peter Finch. The popular Brit joined the likes of Grant Horvat, Luke Kwon and Micah Morris in trying to qualify.

Of course, little can be said until April. There are strict embargos on not revealing who the winner was, and all of those taking part have been relatively quiet on the matter since the March 4th event.

However, speaking on the Rough Cut Podcast, one of Finch’s crew members, Jacob, did share some inside info of what it was like being at the course for the Myrtle Beach Qualifier.

“I wanted to say that I really loved the course but I’m so scared in saying anything that we’re not meant to say. The set up of that course, they just had the Dustin Johnson Junior Worlds, and the first thing we were told when we went into the pro shop is that this course is in the best condition it will ever play,” Jacob said.

Finch then backed him up, adding:

“It was superb. If you ever have been lucky enough to play there, great. If you haven’t then it was just like an American Woburn, with more water. I’m not sure I’d go as far as Sunningdale, this wasn’t like a heathland, I would say Woburn would be the fairest comparison I could give.”

Golf fans are eager to see who has won

While the PGA Tour, DP and LIV Tours remain the big draws in the game, there is a huge element of interest in this Myrtle Beach qualifier stuff.

The fact YouTube and social media personalities are taking part means there is a big chance that a huge army of fans could get to see their favourite online personalities playing in a proper event.

For someone like a Peter Finch or a Grant Horvat to win it, it would feel massive. Obviously, we won’t know until the result in April and there are some top golfers taking part as well who aren’t as well known.

But interest is definitely there with this and it will be interesting to see if the PGA continue to offer this sort of even going into the future.
