Peter Finch can’t quite understand something Viktor Hovland has recently done to his swing after enjoying such a successful 2023.

The Norwegian, who won the 2023 FedEx Cup title, has featured in seven events in 2024. However, he’s yet to land a top-10 finish.

At Augusta, Hovland carded a second-round 81 to miss the cut, and at The Players Championship, the 26-year-old finished T62.

Hovland has made several alterations to his swing since his win at East Lake. The Norwegian called in the help of former professional Grant Waite, who has made profound changes to his action.

Something Finch has suggested is a bit of a head-scratcher.

Speaking on the Rough Cut Podcast, Finch lauded Hovland’s 2023 form and couldn’t quite understand why the 26-year-old changed his winning formula.

“If you’re an elite level golfer like Hovland is and you do want to make a change, it would be for something quite specific,” Finch explained.

“To be honest, with Hovland, it was a bit of a head-scratcher because he seemed to be doing everything right. His short game was massively improved; he was striping it with the full swing.

“He kind of had the all-round package. Realistically, with a couple of better breaks, he would’ve won the USPGA last year. He just got a bit unlucky. For me, I can’t particularly understand why he made those changes, but he knows what he’s doing with his game.”

Can the PGA Championship be a turning point for Viktor Hovland?

After finishing T24 at the Wells Fargo Championship on one over, Hovland is now in Louisville, preparing for the second major of the year at Valhalla.

A 7600 monster of a golf course may not be the best environment for him to really get to grips with his swing, but stranger things have happened.

When at his best, there are very few in the world who can perform at Hovland’s level; his display at the Tour Championship is a testament to that.

There were some signs of recovery at Quail Hollow last week, which was playing extremely tough despite Rory McIlroy’s finishing total.

If he can return to his 2023 best, there’s every chance of Hovland staking a strong claim to land his first major championship.
