YouTube golf star Peter Finch can’t believe something “unbelievable” that has happened to Bryson DeChambeau in the past five years.

DeChambeau came within one shot of forcing a play-off at the PGA Championship on Sunday after carding pulsating final round seven-under 64 at Valhalla.

The big-hitting LIV Golf star had to watch on helplessly as Xander Schauffele rolled home a nerveless birdie putt on the 18th to secure his first major title.

However, DeChambeau’s outing at Valhalla certainly won over some of his critics – overall, it was a positive week for the 2020 U.S. Open champion.

At times, DeChambeau’s antics have been questioned. His overconfidence has seen the 30-year-old become a divisive figure.

Yet, in recent years, after becoming a prominent figure on YouTube, DeChambeau’s popularity has risen.

Speaking on the Rough Cut Podcast, Finch can’t quite believe the American’s turnaround.

He explained: “There’s not a single player in the last five years that has had such a bigger turnaround in public opinion than Bryson. It’s unbelievable. People used to hate him.”

The YouTuber went on to suggest the reason behind DeChambeau’s growing popularity.

“His emotion and the way he puts himself across is what translates, and it’s why we root for him,” he added.

“With Bryson, he’s not the best golfer on the planet; he’s obviously one of the best, but it’s more the fact, he’s going to smash it, hit these amazing shots, he’s going to have mistakes. It’s that rollercoaster that makes it interesting.”

What a turnaround for Bryson DeChambeau

It’s hard to find another player who loves the game of golf more than DeChambeau.

His dedication to mastering his craft is unrivalled, whether that be exploring new limits with equipment or pushing his body to the absolute max physically.

Valhalla embraced him, and the sooner he’s back playing regularly on American soil, the better.

An agreement between LIV Golf and the PGA could see DeChambeau back playing on tour, which is probably the best thing for all concerned.

Such a popular figure, both on and off the course, would do wonders for growing interest in the PGA Tour once more.

Whether DeChambeau’s return becomes a reality is an entirely different question.
