Golf has had some hairy moments over the last few years which have threatened to boil over and few will forget Rory McIlroy’s infamous run-in with Patrick Cantlay and his caddie Joe LaCava at the 2023 Ryder Cup.
McIlroy was initially annoyed with LaCava on the greens as he felt he was in the way of his read for a crucial putt, before LaCava celebrated wildly when Cantlay made his own putt to further entice McIlroy and caddie, Harry Diamond.
After the event, McIlroy was caught on film in the car park of Marco Simone having quite the rant in LaCava’s direction and it paved the way for a tense few days in Italy.
At the time, there were worries among some that things had overstepped the mark and McIlroy and LaCava were bringing the game into disrepute.
However, former Ryder Cup skipper Paul McGinley has suggested the opposite and insisted that, at the time, he felt it was what the event needed.

Luke Donald told he ‘nailed it’ as a captain after Ryder Cup incident involving Rory McIlroy
Speaking in an interview for the Irish Independent, McGinley got onto the subject of the Ryder Cup in Rome last year and specifically, Rory McIlroy’s run-in with Patrick Cantlay’s caddie, Joe LaCava.
And according to McGinley, the outburst from McIlroy was actually a win for captain Luke Donald.
“There’s got to be an edge in sport. We saw it at the Ryder Cup in that car park, in Rome. When I saw that I remember we were on live and I was talking and it came into my ear ‘stop Paul, stop, as quick as you can, we’re going down to the car park’ and I think how boring am I!,” McGinley said.
“Having watched all this unfold, Rich Lerner turned to me and said this has bubbled over the edge and I was like I’m sorry, I disagree. This tells me that Luke has nailed this as a captain.
“That Rory is this wound up, because when Rory gets wound up, and emotionally engaged, that’s when he’s at his best. It’s no surprise Rory had his best Ryder Cup in Rome.”
Rory McIlroy is key for Europe’s 2025 Ryder Cup hopes
McGinley’s comments on a fired up Rory McIlroy are spot on here and going into the 2025 Ryder Cup in New York, Team Europe are going to need him firing.
The expected crowds at Bethpage Black could actually play into McIlroy’s hands a bit and in a way, fire him up to the levels shown in Rome.
At the end of the day, Europe are going to need McIlroy at his very best to come out with anything over in the USA.
As McGinley says here, it’s actually a bit of a masterstroke from Luke Donald in getting McIlroy to the point where he was more determined than ever to win.
