Winning a Ryder Cup is seen as one of the top achievements in golf and we’ve seen some of the best to ever play the game add their names to the list over the years.

For the players of USA and Europe, it’s the biggest and sometimes only team event they ever take part in.

Stakes are high and tensions run even higher at times, while for the captains and vice-captains, it’s a chance to give back to the game and also write their names into history.

Over the years, we’ve seen some titanic battles and while USA leads 27-14 overall, Europe have actually won ten of the last 14 events.

Of course, the 2023 win for Team Europe was a huge one, with Europe taking the glory 16.5 to 11.5, albeit it was even more comfortable than that score suggests.

And according to former Ryder Cup captain Paul McGinley, the result was never in doubt.

Paul McGinley shares why he knew Europe would beat the USA at the 2023 Ryder Cup

Speaking in an interview with the Irish Independent, McGinley spoke on the subject of Europe’s Ryder Cup win in 2023.

And in doing so, McGinley revealed that he had a feeling all along that Europe would triumph.

“In my view in all the Ryder Cups I have been involved with and observed, I get into the weed of everything that goes on in the Ryder Cup, the performance of the European team in Rome was the best I have ever seen. It was the best performance from a European or American team ever. It was phenomenal,” McGinley said.

“I don’t care what team America put out, we were going to win that Ryder Cup. We were phenomenally well prepared, we had a huge amount of form, three of the top four players in the world at the time.

“We were ready and Luke was fantastic as a captain. He had really primed them mentally as well as everything else, we were unified, it was a very strong spirit and we had great strategies. We had really good course set up, Molinari did a great job with the stats.

“And I had a challenge there as I knew this going into it. I was really giddy, but I couldn’t show it on TV.

“So I never want to lie to the viewer but I didn’t want to put myself out there. But I said to people privately there is no way we are not going to win this Ryder Cup. Europe is flying.”

Team Europe have a lot to live up to in 2025

All Ryder Cups are different and it was only back in 2021 that Team USA obliterated Team Europe by an even bigger margain.

Going into the 2025 Ryder Cup, there are so many unanswered questions around the LIV players taking part that at the moment, Europe’s 12 selections could be very different.

Sergio Garcia has spoken to Luke Donald about re-joining the DP World Tour to make the cut, while Matt Wallace is another European who is desperate to be part of the squad.

Going to Bethpage Black will be no easy task and if Europe can win this one, then this current group will go down as one of the best to ever do it.
