Tom McKibbin has paved his own way to The Masters and The Open Championship in 2026.
Winning the Hong Kong Open means Tom McKibbin will play at Augusta National and Royal Birkdale next year. It was the 22-year-old’s third professional win, and the first on the Asian Tour.
McKibbin’s Masters qualification is a major boost for LIV Golf. He’s one of the brightest young stars in the sport, and a potential draw for years to come as the tour fights for his space in the golfing landscape.
But as much as this is a boost for LIV, it’s a threat to the PGA Tour. Rory McIlroy warned McKibbin not to join LIV, but the 22-year-old’s decision appears to have been the right one as he’s now set for the biggest season of his career in 2026.
According to Paul McGinley, McKibbin’s success has caught the attention of several players.

Paul McGinley explains why Tom McKibbin’s success is a threat to the PGA Tour
It was a solid first season on LIV for McKibbin. He had four top-10 finishes and two top fives, as his Legion XIII team won the Team Championship, and teammate Jon Rahm won the individual championship.
Playing alongside Rahm and Tyrrell Hatton in a star-studded team has given him first-hand access to two of the best players in the game, and that’s been key to his quick development.
McGinley also thinks that the paycheck that came with signing with LIV Golf has taken a weight off McKibbin’s shoulders, also allowing him to grow.
Speaking to bunkered, he explained: “He’s been a hell of a player. The events that he’s played on the European Tour, he’s acquitted himself well. He’s been a good player from a very young age.
“Going to LIV, I think, has benefited his career. He’s playing more regularly with better players. That’s always an important thing for any young player’s progress. Being lucky enough to be on the Hatton and Rahm team has helped him.
“He’s also making a lot of money, and that takes away a lot of pressure and gives him a bit more freedom in his golf. The way things are at the moment with him not banned off the tour and waiting on an appeal, he is able to play quite a lot of DP World events on top of the LIV schedule.
“He’s been playing as much golf as he would have played if he had stayed with the PGA Tour. It’s all worked out very well for Tom so far.
“There’s a lot of players looking at Tom McKibbin this year and looking at how much money he’s made and how his career has actually improved. He’s become a better player.
“A lot of players are looking at LIV and thinking they can play in three or four events outside of LIV that will also give me opportunity to qualify for majors, including the Masters.”
Jon Rahm predicted that Tom McKibbin could grow ‘rapidly’ on LIV
Ahead of the 2025 season, Legion XIII captain Rahm responded to McIlroy’s comments on McKibbin’s potential move to LIV.
He said that LIV Golf could provide an environment where McKibbin would learn and grow “rapidly”, and that was proven exactly right.
Rahm told reporters, “I can’t tell you what a good and bad environment is for Tom [McKibbin]. I think that’s an answer for him. I think it [LIV] is a good environment as any, really.
“It’s just as competitive as pretty much any other tour. You have to go out there and play against some of the best players in the world, so yeah, it’s an environment in which you can grow very rapidly, as well.
“He’s a fantastic player, and the possibilities for him are endless whenever he decides to do.”
Now LIV Golf has changed to a 72-hole format in a bid to be recognised for Official World Golf Ranking points, PGA Tour players could be ready to sign with LIV, inspired by McKibbin’s success.
