Scottie Scheffler is The Open champion and as expected, comparisons and comments likening him to Tiger Woods are flooding in from all over.

Scheffler produced yet another dominant performance around Royal Portrush to win by four shots and claim a second major of the year and fourth overall for his career.

He now needs to win the US Open in 2026 to complete the career grand slam and as it stands, few would put it past him doing it.

Of course, Scheffler’s brilliance is bringing plenty of mentions of Tiger Woods. Like Scheffler, Woods dominated for a period of time and many thought we’d not see anything like it so soon.

However, Scheffler is very much going that way with his performance levels at the moment and according to Paul McGinley, he might even usurp Woods.

Paul McGinley says why Scottie Scheffler might be better than Tiger Woods

It takes a lot for anyone in the world of golf to say someone is as good as Tiger, never mind potentially better.

But what we are seeing from Scheffler right now is bringing those conversations to the forefront of people’s minds.

And while Scheffler might still be some way off achieving what Woods did, former Ryder Cup captain Paul McGinley has suggested there is something that could make Scheffler better.

“I have not seen a competitor anywhere close to Tiger Woods as good as this guy. That’s how high the bar is. And I think as time goes on, he might even prove to be a better one, he might even prove to have more longevity than Tiger Woods at the top,” McGinley predicted.

“Because, at this moment in time, it’s hard to see him getting derailed, because he’s so stable off the course as much as he’s stable on the course. And it looks like he’s got that fine balance between golf being really important and loving it and loving to compete, but also that it’s not the most important thing in his life.

“That is the sweet spot there.”

What Scottie Scheffler needs to do to be better than Tiger Woods

It’s a bold call from McGinley and you can see where he is coming from but there is a long way to go for Scottie Scheffler until he is firmly in the Woods conversation.

Right now, he is playing golf as good as Tiger and arguably against fields with greater depth and quality.

However, the numbers do not lie. Woods has 82 wins, 15 majors, and over 700 weeks as world number one.

Right now, Scheffler is some way off that and as McGinley says here, he’ll need sustained consistency – something he may well do – to catch Woods.

Of course, anything can happen in golf but until Scheffler edges towards the 10 major mark at least, to say he is better than Tiger is a bit of a stretch.
