Patrick Reed didn’t hold back when discussing what happened at the Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black in September.

Reed – a three-time US Ryder Cup team member – is a hugely divisive figure in the game of golf and it’s fair to say that he’s not the most popular of players.

The 35-year-old LIV Golf star has often drawn criticism for his on-course behavior and his aloof attitude.

Reed said he was upset to miss out on the Ryder Cup in September, as Keegan Bradley chose to ignore him when making his six captain’s picks.

The Texan showed some good form in 2025, and recorded his first win in Dallas back in June.

He definitely looked more like his old self over on LIV this year, and many believe he actually would have been a real asset to the US Ryder Cup team.

Patrick Reed praised by US fans after his Ryder Cup statement

Reed slammed the US Ryder Cup fans for their ‘appalling behavior’ at Bethpage Black.

He said: “The way I heard the fans acted in New York was uncalled for. It’s embarrassing as an American. I mean, you don’t do that. You don’t act the way you did, say the things you say.

“Stuff like that that needs to be looked at, needs to be checked. It’s supposed to be a gentleman’s game and you go out there and some of the things that people say, it’s just appalling.”

Reed then insisted that he would have been a big asset for the US team.

The LIV golfer said: I felt like I definitely could have helped out the team. I would have been a huge asset to that team. I had multiple conversations with Keegan, and he was very upfront with me and I knew it was an uphill battle to make the team, but at the end of the day, he decided to go a different direction. That’s up to the captain. He’s going to try to put the best team he feels like forward, and, you know, I mean, but I definitely felt like I could have helped that team out.

And American golf fans have come out in unison in support of the 35-year-old.

One simply said: On both counts he is 100% correct. While another made a great point, saying: Absolutely correct. Embarrassed to be an American that weekend. And no, it’s not a NY problem, it’s an our entire country is full of brainless do––––––gs problem. They were on full display for the world to see during the Ryder Cup. Immaturity through the roof.

This sentiment was supported by lots of others, with comments stating: 100% right that we embarrassed ourselves as Americans. The US team members should have strongly admonished the crowds but they didn’t. Reed probably wouldn’t have either in the moment – he likes to play to the crowd. I’m unsure the Cup will ever be the same again.“

And “While I may not agree with some choices he’s made, he’s right about this… some of the behavior I saw was pretty terrible, I’m ok with some heckling and whatnot, but this was way beyond that, and it’s a black eye for American fans to the rest of the world.”

Others were equally passionate in their response.

Right on both counts. For American players to say they are embarrassed about their own fans speaks volumes, it needs serious looking into when held in the US. Secondly he should’ve been picked based on, A. Ryder Cup record & B. His form heading into the event,” one exclaimed. While another added, Patrick Reed is 100% right! Spoke to a friend, who’s a Brit, last week and he mentioned being appalled… not so much by the ‘cheering’ but by the ‘negativity’ of the yelling… US wasn’t cheering for the US team, but instead heckling/cheering against Team Europe. It was awful.

The views continued with fans saying, Good for him. If fans want to be rowdy they can go to a football game. Golf has etiquette. Much like tennis, and He Is correct on both counts. The atrocious behaviour by what was a small minority of fans and the paid first tee MC, and Reed’s value to Team USA, had he been selected.

For once, the majority of US golf fans rallied around Reed and that must be an unusual feeling for him!

Why Colt Knost ‘lost all respect’ for Patrick Reed

Last month, Colt Knost opened up on something that Reed did back in 2018 which he really didn’t like.

When speaking about whether Reed should have been picked for the Ryder Cup team this year, Knost said: Patrick Reed, there was some talk about it. He finished third at Augusta and went out and won at LIV Dallas.

He had the opportunity to go out there at The Open and make Keegan Bradley look at his name and think about it, and he went out there and missed the cut. I’m sorry, you had a chance to perform.

I know his record at the Ryder Cup but there is one thing he did that will never leave him is he threw his team and captain under the bus in Paris.

Patrick Reed got put with Tiger and he complained, I’m sorry I lost all respect right there. You cannot throw your team under the bus like that, when you’re paired with the greatest players of all time.

Reed’s complaints about being paired with Tiger were borne from the fact that Jordan Spieth didn’t want to be his partner at the 2018 Ryder Cup in Paris.

And he lost a lot of fans for his comments about the whole situation.

However, the good news for Reed is that he seems to have regained some respect due to his comments about the 2025 Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black.
