Jay Monahan has been in the headlines recently, with talks over a unification agreement with PIF accelerating.

The sport was rocked in June 2023 when the PGA Tour, DP World Tour and the PIF-bankrolled LIV Golf announced a framework agreement to form an entity for commercial assets and end litigation between tours.

However, no agreement has been reached, with the December 31 deadline extended.

Monahan has since provided an update on how talks are progressing between the three tours. He told Sky Sports: “Our negotiations are accelerating as we spend time together.” He added: “While we have several key issues that we still need to work through, we have a shared vision to quiet the noise and unlock golf’s worldwide potential.”

He added: “It’s going to take time, but I reiterate what I said at the Tour Championship in August. I see a positive outcome for the PGA Tour and the sport as a whole.”

The process has dragged on for a considerable amount of time, and ahead of The Players Championship, Patrick Cantlay has been asked if he still has faith in the PGA chief.

Patrick Cantlay questioned on Jay Monahan PGA position

Talking ahead of Thursday’s first round at TPC Sawgrass, Cantlay believes it’s essential for the tours to pull together in the same direction.

“I think it’s really important that we are all rowing in the same direction,” he said.

“I think with the PGA Tour enterprises board, it’s really exciting that we have a chance to start with something new and all move in the right direction.”

On whether Monahan is the right man to lead the PGA Tour, the 31-year-old added: “I think right now he’s definitely our leader. It’s best for everyone to be rowing in the right direction for the membership and the tour.”

Jay Monahan needs to reach LIV Golf agreement

Whether specific individuals like it or not, an agreement must emerge soon. There’s a consensus that unity is required, much like Cantlay mentioned. The world’s best events need the best players participating.

It’s undoubtedly a difficult situation for Monahan, with Anthony Kim’s return to the PGA Tour also sparking questions from the press on Tuesday.

The sooner an agreement is reached, the sooner the media circus surrounding the PGA Tour, LIV Golf and DP World Tour will die down.
