Patrick Cantlay is one of a number of players in the mix at The Travelers Championship in a stacked field that is seeing the cream rise to the top.

Big names like Justin Thomas and Scottie Scheffler are at the top of the leaderboard but American Ryder Cup hopeful Cantlay is not far behind.

Cantlay carded another solid round of two under par to go five under and just four back of the leaders.

As we know, The Travelers is one of the signature events on the PGA Tour but over the years, has been one players often choose to miss after the US Open.

However, big names are there in abundance this week and when asked to give his thoughts on the tournament as a whole, Cantlay was full of praise for the Connecticut event.

Patrick Cantlay gives verdict on The Travelers after round two

The Travelers is shaping up to be a superb tournament and with so many big names at the top, we could be in for a hugely exciting weekend.

With Cantlay one of those players and having not won since 2023, he will be desperate to boost his Ryder Cup hopes with a win.

But in terms of the event itself, Cantlay is more than happy to be there competing.

“Yeah, it’s so great to see this tournament evolve over the years,” Cantlay said when asked for his thoughts on the event. “It’s become one of the best tournaments on TOUR. I know speaking for a lot of the guys, we really look forward to coming this week. It doesn’t feel like 14 years ago that I played my first one, but it’s been real cool to see how much better the golf tournament has got each and every year.”

Asked specifically about the conditions at the course and the change in weather, Cantlay admitted that things are different.

“Yeah, I’d say it’s still fairly soft. The greens are pretty receptive. I’m sure it’ll dry out a little bit this afternoon, but given the morning tee time, it’s pretty soft out there,” he added.

“Yeah, I think wind definitely makes it the most challenging because it’s hard to get your golf ball into the right spot. Especially when it’s a wind like today where it’s a little inconsistent and really strong at times. But rain is probably more annoying because you have to do more to keep everything dry.”

Patrick Cantlay desperately needs a PGA Tour win

There are number of big name players now who need to get back in the winner’s circle after a long absence and Patrick Cantlay is one of them.

Justin Thomas broke his duck this season but the likes of Collin Morikawa, Jordan Spieth and Rickie Fowler are all with Cantlay in not being able to win.

Right now, at four back of the leaders, he’ll know he’s in a great position to put pressure on over the weekend and be somewhere to compete on Sunday.

He’ll need to play well, but for now, Cantlay can be happy and as Justin Thomas and Denny McCarthy showed in round two, low scores are out there to be had.
