The eight PGA Tour Signature Events captured the imagination during the 2024 season as Scottie Scheffler claimed four titles.

The elevated tournaments provided an opportunity for limited fields to compete for increased purses and more FedEx Cup points. Scheffler has taken advantage of the current PGA Tour system and is now among the highest-paid golfers of all time.

As the FedEx Cup top 50 get set for the second playoff event in Denver, world number nine Patrick Cantlay has been discussing Signature Events.

And the 2021 FedEx Cup champion believes change is afoot.

Speaking ahead of the BMW Championship, Cantlay started by praising the Signature Events in 2024.

“I feel like they’ve gone really well,” said the American. I’ve talked to a number of the guys, and they feel like the events are some of the best they’ve played in their time being on the PGA Tour. I feel like the sponsors have been happy with it. The golf courses have been in great shape. I think they’ve gone really well.”

Billy Horschel claimed he would like to see Signature Event fields increased, and Cantlay confirmed it’s something the board are looking into.

“I think it’s something we should always be looking at,” Cantlay added. “But I think you have to give it some time. We made, obviously, some significant changes in the last year or two, so analyzing this year, because it has been a significant change and seeing what the effects are, and I know we’re doing that at the PAC and board level.”

Signature Event qualification on the PGA Tour

Those who participate in Signature Events have more control over schedules and hold a massive advantage over the rest of the PGA Tour. Increased FedEx Cup points and prize money can almost guarantee a spot in the playoffs at the bare minimum.

But who exactly qualifies for the Signature Events?

Currently, the top 50 in the prior season’s FedEx Cup points list, meaning all those at this week’s BMW Championship are in. The Aon Next 10, if not already exempt, are the next to be granted access. The Aon Swing 5 also qualifies the five players who earn the most in the tournaments between Signature Events.

Moving on, any player who has won during the current year, along with the OWGR top 30, will be invited to Signature Events. Finally, each sponsor has a limited amount of exemptions.
