Jordan Spieth sprung a bit of a surprise by deciding to play in the Cognizant Classic as the three-time major champion continues his comeback after missing the latter months of the 2024 season due to his wrist injury.

Jordan Spieth has taken little time to remind everyone of why he is box office entertainment on the PGA Tour. He finished towards the bottom of the leaderboard at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am upon his return.

Spieth was given an early worry as he jarred his wrist at the event. But he then went on to produce an outstanding performance at the WM Phoenix Open as he finished in a tie for fourth at TPC Scottsdale.

Those of us who got a little carried away with Spieth’s performance in Arizona were brought back down to earth at the Genesis Invitational as he missed the cut at Torrey Pines. But many golf fans were surprised as Spieth confirmed that he will tee it up at the Cognizant Classic this week.

Concerns for Jordan Spieth ahead of the Cognizant Classic

Spieth has not played the event during his career. And perhaps there is a good reason for that. Speaking on his RickRunGood YouTube channel, Rick Gehman admitted that he is not optimistic about Spieth’s chances at the tournament.

“Jordan Spieth, playing the Cognizant for the very first time. Why might that be? Could mean a lot of things. Could mean he wants to play, could mean he needs to play, could be they’ve got baby on the way and he needs to play now before baby comes. I don’t know what it means,” he said.

“On paper, this is about as bad as it gets for Jordan Spieth in terms of golf courses. Tight, with water coming into play on a lot of different shots. The putter has been disgustingly bad. He’s lost strokes putting in six out of seven. The approach play has been bipolar, very Jordan Spieth-esque. No, thank you. I will wait and see and I will enjoy the ride.”

How Jordan Spieth has started the 2025 PGA Tour season

It would have been naive to expect Spieth’s form to improve week on week. He has been dealing with his wrist injury for a number of years, so he has almost had to rediscover how he played the game previously.

And clearly, his injury issues are not entirely behind him. Rex Hoggard spoke of being shocked by Spieth admitting that he was uncomfortable during the first two rounds at Torrey Pines.

Hopefully that is just Spieth’s wrist adapting to the demands of being back on tour. But some will be a little concerned that he will be forced to manage the problem rather than ever recover fully.

Expectations are clearly quite low considering how well he performed in Phoenix earlier this month. It would be fantastic therefore, to see Spieth prove a bit of a point at PGA National.
