PGA Tour youngster Michael Thorbjornsen started impressively the Sanderson Farms Championship.

The American carded a bogey-free nine-under-par 63 and currently sits second behind Englishman David Skinns. Skinns sits at 12-under after shooting a remarkable round of 60 at The Country Club of Jackson.

Despite starting fast, PGA Tour youngster Thorbjornsen admitted he was a little disappointed with the start of his round in Mississippi.

Speaking to the media after his opening 18, Thorbjornsen claimed his opening shot to the par-three ninth wasn’t up to standard.

“It was a little sloppy on that first hole, but it’s kind of weird starting off with a par-3. But obviously holed out a bunker shot, which was a great shot, to kind of kick-start the round,” the American said.

“I was a little stray off the tee with the driver, maybe the first five or six holes, but I really managed to sort that out and hit a lot of fairways on the back nine.”

Thorbjornsen continued: “Definitely played better on the back nine than I did the front nine, just took advantage of good breaks and made a couple of putts. But feeling pretty good, hitting the irons well, so yeah.”

Michael Thorbjornsen set for full PGA Tour card in 2025

Thorbjornsen officially secured his 2025 card as the number one player in the PGA Tour University Class after completing a four-year career at Standford.

The American’s PGA Tour University record is impressive, having posted three wins and also making the cut in three events.

Thorbjornsen’s best finish on the PGA Tour came at the 2022 Travelers Championship, where he finished in fourth place.

Golf commentator Smylie Kaufman is a fan of Thorbjornsen and is excited to see what the 23-year-old can do in the 2025 campaign.

“I want these young guys like Thorbjornsen and Luke Clanton. Those are the guys I want to see given more opportunities,” Kaufman said.

“PGA Tour U has been a great avenue for the likes of Davis Thompson and Ludvig Aberg and you’ve seen how this young generation has created this David vs Goliath storyline.”
