An already turbulent season for Jordan Spieth continued this past week, with the three-time major champion finishing inside the top 10 at the Cognizant Classic.
Jordan Spieth would have surprised many with his decision to play the Cognizant Classic as he continues his comeback from wrist surgery. The 31-year-old had never previously featured in the event.
There were concerns that PGA National would not be a good fit for Spieth. He has certainly been erratic since returning to action on the PGA Tour, and the Florida course threatens danger at almost every turn.
It was a shame that Spieth was not more of a factor on Sunday, as he left himself with too much to do to really make a charge for the title. However, he will take plenty of positives from his showing.
Jordan Spieth’s Ryder Cup hopes assessed after the Cognizant Classic
Of course, much of the talk right now surrounds Spieth not being invited to the Arnold Palmer Invitational this week. Spieth would take a jibe at the decision, joking that he needed to play better while injured to get the call.

But there are plenty of positive signs heading into the rest of the season. He finished tied for fourth at the WM Phoenix Open, and currently has as many top 10s at the start of 2025 as Scottie Scheffler.
And he has now been backed to make sure that he will be a part of Keegan Bradley‘s US Ryder Cup team at Bethpage later this year, with Michael Kim – who finished tied for sixth at PGA National – taking to X to confidently predict that both Spieth and Daniel Berger will make the side following their performances this week.
How Jordan Spieth has performed at the Ryder Cup
Spieth has been an ever-present at the Ryder Cup ever since making his debut back in 2014. And he has formed a couple of impressive partnerships, with the likes of Patrick Reed and Justin Thomas.
Only Reed claimed more points than Spieth on the American side at Gleneagles in 2014. Meanwhile, it was a similar story in 2018, with Thomas the only member of the visiting side to outscore Spieth.
| Ryder Cup | Points won |
| 2014 | 2.5 |
| 2016 | 2.5 |
| 2018 | 3 |
| 2021 | 1.5 |
| 2023 | 1 |
The 2021 and 2023 events were less impressive personally, but Spieth did produce a moment of magic at Whistling Straits with one of the greatest chip shots of all-time which nearly left him flying into Lake Michigan.
And while he is some way off being the player who won three majors, matchplay may be the ideal format to bring out the best in Spieth right now. He can swiftly move on from any mistakes he makes, while moments of brilliance will be so much more impactful.
