Rory McIlroy has not had the week he’d have wanted at the PGA Championship this week and the big story from The Masters winner is more focused on his driver change.

McIlroy was said to have been forced to change driver prior to the tournament starting, as the random spot-checkers who come for testing deemed his club was in breach of current regulations.

Since then, McIlroy has struggled around Quail Hollow and sits well back of the leaders after only just making the cut.

After not speaking to the media on the opening few days, there has been much speculation about the McIlroy driver issue.

However, while some are trying to make it a huge issue, fellow PGA Tour star Michael Kim has shared his verdict on proceedings. And it seems that in reality, it’s not that much of a problem.

Michael Kim shares information on Rory McIlroy’s driver change

Michael Kim is always good for an answer and explanation on all things golf and he’s been on his social media account as usual giving the details.

This time, Kim has used his platform to explain why what happened with McIlroy is pretty normal, revealing that the same happened to him at the AMEX.

Adding further information when questioned by a fan on the matter, Kim then explained just why the driver head wears down so much.

“Yes, club heads get thinner as we hit them but it’s very minimal. Apparently some time ago, a company would make drivers over the line consistently to make their drivers hotter and tour had to implement testing.”

It seems, then, that McIlroy’s equipment swap is not as controversial as some are trying to make out.

Furthermore, it proves that Johnson Wagner’s explanation on the issue was also correct, with McIlroy not at fault.

Driver change can’t be an excuse for poor Rory McIlroy performance

This week has been a shocker for Rory McIlroy. Coming into this tournament, he was on cloud nine and in the form of his life, at a course where he’s won so many times.

However, he’s just not had the game and the difference between him and Scottie Scheffler has been stark.

Whether or not McIlroy mentions the driver change, remains to be seen. But one thing is for sure and that’s that he can’t use it as any sort of excuse.

When push comes to shove, he’s just not been good enough on the week.
