With there being less than a day before The 2025 Masters gets underway, there’s still plenty of time for the professionals to offer up advice to those amateurs who feel they could tackle Augusta National.
The question of what an amateur would shoot around Augusta National is a common one and in Masters week, the topic is touched on more than once.
The common agreement among golfers and pros is that an amateur would struggle massively.
And while golf analyst Ryan Lavner said he shot 88 and 89 the two times he played (he is a six handicap), Rick Shiels believes breaking 100 would be an almost impossible task for an 18-handicap.
Now, adding more weight to the argument, Max Homa has given his take on what an amateur would shoot if they actually started on the greens.

Max Homa shares what an amateur golfer would shoot at Augusta starting on the greens
Speaking on the latest episode of the Pardon My Take golf podcast, Homa was asked about the average amateur and specifically, how they’d do starting on each green.
And according to Homa, it wouldn’t be good news.
“If you got to place it on the worst place you could get to. You wouldn’t shoot in the 80’s,” Homa admitted.
“I think you would three putt a lot and sprinkle in a four putt. I do think you would two putt as the day went on, as not every green is crazy. But I would never suggest doing that, that would humble you, that would suck. You would start on the green and be making threes and fours a lot. That would suck.”
Even if at best an amateur managed to three putt every hole, that is still 54 shots, Add in the potential for a few fours and five putts in there, and even rolling off the greens entirely, then there’s every chance you end up in the 80s as Homa says.
The most putts ever taken on a single hole at Augusta National
While golf is hard for the amateurs, that sometimes translates into the professional game as well and even for major champions.
Indeed, back in the 2016 edition of The Masters, the great Ernie Els set the record for the most putts on a single hole at Augusta.
Els somehow managed to six-putt the very first hole to have the worst start possible and begin with a sextuple bogey.
Remarkably, Els has actually chipped to within four feet for his par putt and then somehow managed to make a complete hash of things. The six putts remains a record, and shows just how hard Augusta can be on the greens.
