Max Homa has revealed what everyone has told him after he decided to make a change to his driver ahead of the US Open at Pinehurst No. 2 this week.
Max Homa is perhaps one of the outside contenders to come out on top at the US Open in the coming days, with the 33-year-old inside the top 10 in the world rankings right now.
However, he has arrived at Pinehurst No. 2 not in the best form, with just one top 10 in his last five events on the PGA Tour. He also missed the cut at the Charles Schwab Challenge.
And it appears that the American is looking to make changes for the third major of the year. According to the PGA Tour stats, Homa is currently ranked 125th for strokes gained off the tee this season.
Max Homa reveals driver change he has made ahead of US Open
Speaking on Golf Channel, Homa shared the alterations he has made to his driver – and it turns out that it may be perfectly timed as the world’s best gather in North Carolina.
“I kind of got lucky in that I hadn’t been driving it well, and we found if we bring the flight of my driver down, it’s a lot straighter and everyone was telling me, hey, that’s a really key thing out here,” he said.

“You’re going to be able to hit a BB and it’ll roll out maybe just as far as the high bombs. So I wouldn’t say that I prepped for that, but it’s just worked out so far, so I like that.”
Form book needs to be ripped up
A tournament at a course like Pinehurst is going to largely be decided by who makes the fewest mistakes, with the track able to decimate a promising score almost in an instant.
Homa – who has made one cut in five US Open appearances – was very much in contention at The Masters earlier this year until a big mistake on the 12th on Sunday when he went long.
Homa is inside the top 50 for strokes gained with his approaches to the green, and that could be particularly important around Pinehurst, which can be so ruthless with anything which misses the right spot on the greens.
With that, if Homa can put himself in perfect position off the tee more often than not, then perhaps he can rip up the form book and enjoy a special week.
