It would be an understatement to suggest that it has been a difficult start to the year for Max Homa, with the 34-year-old missing his last three cuts on the PGA Tour.

When Max Homa was getting ready to tee off on 12 on Sunday at the Masters last year, it appeared that there was a very real chance that he may have a shot at winning his first major title. Unfortunately, a mistake on the iconic hole put paid to his chances of catching Scottie Scheffler – and he has barely been in contention since.

Homa made the decision to split with coach Mark Blackburn later in the year, and instead began to work with John Scott Rattan. However, the change is yet to reap rewards on the golf course.

Homa has missed three cuts in six starts, while he withdrew from the Farmers Insurance Open after posting an opening 77 at Torrey Pines. His best result in 2025 has been a tied 26th finish at The Sentry.

Max Homa shares what’s been really frustrating since switching swing coaches

But it seems that Homa is convinced that the turning point is coming. Speaking to CBS ahead of the Players Championship, he explained how annoyed he has been to not show the progress that he feels that he has made with his new coach.

“Obviously, it hasn’t really worked. It’s been really frustrating because he’s amazingly smart. He’s done some really great work. I just haven’t put it together on the course,” he said.

“But this has been the best I’ve swung the golf club. Everyone thinks I’m crazy, but this is the best I’ve swung a golf club on a driving range, and at home and at the practice range here at Sawgrass, it’s just the best I’ve really ever hit it. The most consistent, the way it feels, all of it is amazing, I’ve just not taken it to the course well. But that’s golf for you, I guess.”

What Max Homa said about his driving after what has been his best finish of the year at The Sentry

It is definitely refreshing to hear Homa feel so positive about the direction he is going in, as it would be easy for him to get extremely down on himself and try and head down a completely different path.

Obviously, the results simply have to improve in the coming months as Homa currently finds himself 146th in the FedEx Cup standings. But there does appear to be a confidence that he is going about things the right way.

Homa was delighted with his driving at The Sentry, claiming that he drove the ball at Kapalua better than anywhere else since the Masters the previous year. Meanwhile, he is inside the top 50 on the PGA Tour for strokes gained around the greens.

There is still so much work to do, but perhaps those writing Homa off will be proven emphatically wrong in the months to come.
