Max Homa will make his fifth PGA Tour appearance of the season this week as he takes on the Genesis Invitational at Torrey Pines.

Homa loves working with caddie Joe Greiner, but it certainly hasn’t been the best start to the season for the former.

Torrey Pines South welcomes a star-studded PGA Tour field for the Genesis Invitational, with Homa certain to be up against it once more this week.

Scottie Scheffler will try to improve his Torrey Pines record, with the world number one joined in the field by the likes of Rory McIlroy and Collin Morikawa.

Homa finished T26 at The Sentry first up, before withdrawing during the second round of the Farmers Insurance Open, which took place at Torrey Pines South.

Max Homa drives the best he ever has despite missing WM Phoenix Open cut

He then finished T53 at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, before missing the cut at the WM Phoenix Open last week.

Speaking ahead of the Genesis Invitational, Homa noted that he has been frustrated since April, and was asked in a press conference if that is a reference to post-Masters.

“No, yeah, just the Masters is the last good golf tournament I played,” he replied. “I think I got eighth or seventh at the now Truist, Quail Hollow. I drove it awful there.

“I’ve been swinging it very poorly since last… since right after the Nedbank like two years ago. I won there and I wasn’t really swinging it well going into it, to be honest.

“I swung it really well at the Ryder Cup that year and then took a bit of time off and I don’t know, it just like never really came back.

“I had a nice little run, you know, played well at the Valero and played well at Augusta and thought OK, I kind of got it and I’ve really never hit the ball well since then.

“Like I said, last week was… I randomly played quite well at the Presidents Cup this year, like I hit it incredible, but there’s been so few weeks I can hold onto as good.

“That’s what’s so odd about last week is that is the best I swung the golf club like potentially, this is going to sound crazy, but potentially ever.

“Like it’s the best I’ve driven, as easy as I could imagine or I could remember ever hitting a driver. Curved less, I was more out of the middle.

“Things like if you were just watching golf you would never be able to see, but just the point and shoot and things I like to see is on the hardest tee shots, especially Thursday.

“Like 11, I hate that tee shot, it was my highest ball speed, which means I have some freedom again. Those are the things I’m looking at.

“I know this all sounds hilarious to people because it’s been so bad and I missed the cut by five, but I was like really excited about last week.

“It was a shame I didn’t get two more rounds under my belt just to keep doing it. Last week finally on that Tuesday I gave everybody on my team a hug because it finally felt like I was like going forward.

“It’s felt like I’ve been just going backwards for months. Yeah, Augusta was awesome, but definitely two weeks later felt like it was a bit of a flash in the pan unfortunately.”

What are Max Homa’s driving stats ahead of the Genesis Invitational?

Homa is a six-time PGA Tour champion, but last clinched success at the Farmers Insurance Open in 2023.

Fittingly, however, that victory took place at Torrey Pines South, where he edged out Keegan Bradley by two shots.

That should give Homa plenty of confidence heading into the Genesis Invitational, with his rounds of 68, 70, 71 and 66 helping him to a 13-under finish back then.

But his driving stats may just provide a bit of worry going into his latest tournament, even though Homa felt he was striking the ball superbly.

Homa ranks 52nd in Strokes Gained: Off the tee and 153rd in total driving through six weeks of the season.
