Matt Scharff says what Jack Nicklaus was really like behind the scenes after filming YouTube video with him

Jack Nicklaus is arguably the greatest player to have ever graced the game.

Nicklaus won 18 majors and 73 PGA Tour titles throughout his time on the PGA Tour.

Incredibly, Nicklaus made a record 131 cuts in major championships as well – 28 clear of second-placed Phil Mickelson.

Some golf fans think Tiger Woods is the greatest of all time, but the Golden Bear just edges it for me due to the fact he won three more majors than the 49-year-old.

What made him a true great was the fact that he was a real gentleman both on and off the golf course.

A shining example of Nicklaus’s character was when he consoled Tom Watson after his heartbreaking loss at the 2009 Open Championship.

We all know he was a tremendously gifted golfer, but all the signs point to him being a top-class human being as well.

So what is he really like behind the scenes?

Golf content creator Matt Scharff got to spend the day with Nicklaus recently, while filming for his Good Good YouTube channel.

So Scharff got to see what the 18-time major champion is really like behind closed doors.

And he couldn’t have spoken highly enough about Nicklaus.

Scharff said: “He’s a bro! When you meet a legend like that we are all very nervous. We are just 20 year old kids, we are literally all like we should not be here. What are we actually doing here? Getting to film Jack and talking to him at lunch. Ordering what he is ordering. We talked for a long time and spent so many hours with him. He shared so many different stories, I wrote them all down in my notes so I could tell my kids about it later.

“You would think when you meet someone like that he is going to be a certain way. When you meet someone very high up there in their craft, you expect them in your mind to be a certain way and act a certain way.

“But I think with Jack he was right off the get-go, he apologised for why we couldn’t play Muirfield, which everybody got wrong! He wasn’t saying we can’t play and Good Good can’t be here. If you listen to it, you will understand he was very sorry and it was very unfortunate we weren’t able to play, there was some weather stuff and course maintenance issues and he didn’t want to send a bad message.

“We have played Muirfield before and Jack has invited us back out to play Muirfield to play whenever we want. So that was also misconstrued among the public that Jack didn’t want us there, not the case at all.

“But he started right off the bat with an apology and we were like ‘brother, you could punch us all in the face and we are going to be alright!’

“So he started off super humble and told a lot of great stories and then we thought our time was done he was like why don’t you join me for lunch?

“We were all like huh! We are supposed to have 30 minutes with you and you are supposed to be somewhere else.

“We are partnered with Play Yellow as well, which is the organisation which him and Barbara started, and we started talking about all that and that’s why he was super excited to meet us as one of the brand ambassadors for that. He was just so unbelievably excited.

“Then we had lunch and talked even more and he opened up about a lot of cool different stories he had when he was on tour and all these people he played with.

“I was like you have so much in your brain, how do you even remember what you did at your fourth tournament?

“You would think he would be like I don’t remember nothing, but he remembered to the minute detail about some certain shots that he played years and years ago.“

Jack Nicklaus’s incredible major record

Nicklaus has always insisted that being a good person is more important to him than being a good golfer, much like how Scottie Scheffler views life.

However, he was a truly outstanding golfer.

He is the man who stands alone at the top in every single major championship category throughout history.

Looking at his numbers like that makes you realise just how dominant he was in the game’s four most important tournaments.

Nicklaus is one of the two best golfers in the history of the game, probably the best.

And how nice is it to hear that he is such an incredibly down-to-earth person away from the game as well.
