Ludvig Aberg proved why he is a potential future superstar in the game of golf with his second PGA Tour win, which came at the Genesis Invitational at Torrey Pines this past week.

Those who doubted Ludvig Aberg previously would have pointed to the Swede going through 2024 without winning on either the PGA Tour or the DP World Tour as a reason to question the high expectations. Aberg was accused of being overhyped by Tiger Woods‘ former coach Hank Haney.

But those doubts should have now been completely silenced.

Aberg produced a masterclass over the final 13 holes at the Genesis Invitational to win by one over Maverick McNealy at Torrey Pines. Woods was amongst those to laud Aberg, with the 15-time major champion hosting the tournament.

It has been a phenomenal rise for the 25-year-old. He made his Ryder Cup debut within a few months of turning professional, while he marked his Masters bow by finishing second.

Certainly, those on tour are in no doubt about how much talent Aberg possesses. Speaking after facing him in TGL, Lucas Glover suggested that he has been a huge admirer of the youngster’s for a long time now.

“Yeah, I had to play him in singles, and I didn’t really like my chances,” he said.

“I got paired with him last year somewhere – Riviera, actually, a year ago. I was impressed as I’ve ever been watching anybody. I told him after, more for his demeanor and his composure than his game. To me, that’s the most impressive about him is the way he does it the right way, humbly, and a lot like Scottie.

“It’s impressive to watch somebody that young with that much game and that much success already and still do it with his humility and grace.”

Aberg’s strokes gained numbers at the Genesis Invitational

Aberg’s statistics for the season obviously tell a slightly different story given that he was dealing with illness at both the Farmers Insurance Open and the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, but his numbers from the Genesis Invitational show why Glover put him in a similar category to Scottie Scheffler.

What was remarkable about Scheffler’s game in 2024 was just how well-rounded he was. There was not a single part of his game which was a weakness – with his putting slightly better than average on the PGA Tour.

It is one event with a smaller field, but it is noticeable how Aberg shone in each strokes gained category. Around a course as challenging as Torrey Pines, that is a real statement.
