LIV Golf name-checks Rory McIlroy in social media post to rouse suspicions

Rory McIlroy might be performing well out on the golf course in Dubai this week but he continues to make headlines off the course as well.

McIlroy’s recent interview on the Stick to Football podcast with Gary Neville caused quite the stir.

The Northern Irishman appeared to back down over some of his initial opinions on LIV Golf and those who joined. That caused the likes of Greg Norman and Jon Rahm to react to the news, with many believing Rory is now softening to the idea.

Indeed, since that interview, McIlory has spoken of how LIV should be used as an IPL style tournament and that LIV, the PGA and the DP World Tour should come together to form one lucrative world tour.

Of course, McIlory’s gripes with LIV and in particular, Norman, are well known.

So today, it’s come as a surprise to see the official LIV Golf X account actually name-check McIlroy in a post about teaming up with Rahm to take on Bryson Dechambeau and Brooks Koepka.

A matter of time for McIlory, LIV and more

As this ticks along week by week, it does seem like we are edging towards something being agreed by the tours.

Keith Pelley also moving on from the DP World Tour this week opens another door and it would be no surprise to see Rory McIlroy involved in some sort of LIV tournament in the not so distant future.

McIlroy is quite open in his feelings about how things have been so far. However, he’s also showing a maturity to recognise that things need to be ironed out in the future.

LIV mentioning Rory on a post on socials might not seem a major deal to some, but it’s one of the few times they’ve actually name-checked him, and the idea of him teaming up with Rahm to take on Koepka and Dechambeau in a team event is something that Rory himself has suggested would intrigue him.

Certainly, it seems a case of watch this space in the entire golfing world right now.
