Lexi Thompson is among the LPGA Tour stars preparing for the CME Group Tour Championship this week.

Tiburon Golf Club in Naples, Florida hosts the tournament, which comes after a mixed week for the LPGA Tour.

The LPGA Tour were praised for partnering Nelly Korda and Caitlin Clark at The ANNIKA, with the basketball star having played the Pro-AM.

But the LPGA Tour also faced criticism from Nelly Korda and Charley Hull for the slow pace of play at the tournament.

Korda and Hull both finished their third rounds in darkness due to the issue, with the latter suggesting players should be stripped of their tour cards if penalised three times for slow play.

Lexi Thompson says how the LPGA Tour can still improve

Next up in the schedule is the CME Group Tour Championship, where Korda will be full of confidence after her seventh win of the season at The ANNIKA.

Her fellow American Lexi Thompson, who missed the cut last week, has now discussed the current situation with the LPGA Tour and the increased interest in women’s sports.

“Yeah, well, first and foremost, I think women’s sports in general are on such a high right now and moving in the right direction, whether it’s growing in each sport or golf in general,” she said in her opening CME Group Tour Championship press conference.

“You know, I’ve always said in any interviews since I turned pro the game of golf our sponsors, tournaments, purses, they’ve all raised and our TV coverage has increased. I think we could keep on improving. I think there is a lot more room for improvement.

“I think we’re making as many stories as we can and focusing on all the good, but I think there is so many talents out here and so many stories that we can really focus on and really bring in a lot of fans and bring in a bigger fan base than what we have. I think there is just more room for improvement. We’re improving right now, but there is a lot more to go.”

The women’s game has gone from strength to strength in recent years, helped by the likes of US stars Thompson and Korda.

And there is still real plans to grow the game further, with the LPGA Tour having confirmed a record prize fund of over $131million for the 2025 season.

Following on from her comments about stories to focus on in the future, Thompson was asked exactly how those stories could be told.

“That’s a great question as well,” she responded. “I think just showing the personalities of the players out here. Of course everybody sees the talent. I think more and more people need to realize how talented the women are out here and come out and support us. Because I don’t think TV does it justice. I think you have to see it in person.

“But, yeah, there is so many great personalities out here. It’s just a matter of making those stories based on those people that are willing to open up and really show the world they’re our more than just golf. There is way more to us than that.”
