Lee Westwood burst back into form at LIV Golf Nashville last week, and now the Englishman has explained the improvement he made in Tennessee.

The former world number-one produced his best LIV Golf 2024 finish by some distance, placing third after carding rounds of 69, 66 and 66.

Westwood’s return to form was undoubtedly needed. The 51-year-old is ranked 33rd in the individual standings, and he even recently called for the breakaway league to move entirely to a team-based format.

The Englishman is now set to feature in the US Senior Open, and Westwood has shed light on what went right for him in Nashville.

Speaking ahead of this week’s senior major championship at Newport Country Club, Westwood explained how he’s swinging the club better.

“I started to swing well, and my whole game was coming together when I played at LIV Houston three weeks ago,” Westwood said.

“Then I went home and did a little bit of work on it. I probably haven’t been working as hard on my game as I would have liked to, but I put in a bit more work in the week off.”

The former world number one also suggested his work with the flat stick had improved.

He added: “I went to Nashville and carried on really with that theme, those swing thoughts. Putted well last week. I sharpened my short game up because I’ve been playing more, and my game is in a really good place. … Played well on the final day, which was good.

“I haven’t been finishing tournaments off, so [to perform well on] the last four holes and finish that tournament off strongly has given me a lot of confidence going into this week.”

Lee Westwood silences critics at LIV Golf Nashville

Westwood, after his controversial switch to LIV Golf, isn’t the most popular figure at the best of times. So, his poor recent form on the breakaway tour has given his critics plenty of ammunition.

However, his positive performance in Nashville has perhaps proved some of the doubters wrong.

The Englishman managed to compete at the top of a leaderboard, which included Jon Rahm, Bryson DeChambeau, and Joaquin Niemann.

Westwood now must ensure last week’s performance wasn’t simply a flash in the pan, starting at the Senior US Open, which gets underway on Thursday.
