Lee Westwood has suggested that LIV Golf should get rid of one part of its current format to make it easier for fans to understand.

2024 has been a season to forget for the Englishman, who currently sits 54th in the individual standings.

So far, Westwood’s highest finish came in the season-opener in Mayakoba, where he placed 32nd.

In his most recent outing in Singapore, Westwood finished 49th – and now, the Englishman has called for one part of LIV’s format to be scrapped.

Unsurprisingly, and perhaps due to his poor form, Westwood has called for LIV to make the league solely centred around the team aspect.

Talking on Peter Finch’s Rough Cut Podcast, the 51-year-old believes more needs to be made of the team dynamic.

He explained: “I think the team dynamic, more should be made of it, really. I think it’s still too based around the individual tournaments.”

Westwood went on to suggest it should get to a point where LIV Golf is completely team-orientated.

“We should get to a point where it’s just all team and more made of that,” he added. “It would make it easier for the public to understand if there wasn’t any individual thing. It’s just pure team golf, which golf needs. It’s fresh, new and great to get a younger audience involved.”

LIV Golf change feels unlikely

LIV Golf changing their format feels extremely unlikely at the moment. Those who regularly compete at the top of the leaderboard – Bryson DeChambeau, Brooks Koepka, Joaquin Niemann, etc – would feel pretty aggrieved to see the alteration.

Removing the individual aspect would take away the competitiveness for a lot of players and would almost certainly cause a backlash.

Realistically, Westwood’s poor form has a lot to do with his comments. If he were pushing toward the top of the leaderboard regularly, he wouldn’t be suggesting such sweeping changes.

Right now, the rest of the golfing world has yet to really get on board with LIV’s team aspect.

There’s certainly lots of work to do.
