Charley Hull can hold her head high after a stunning Solheim Cup that involved a singles win over world number one Nelly Korda.

Korda loves playing at the Solheim Cup, but she found herself on the receiving end of a 6&4 Sunday loss to Hull.

The Team Europe star edged past the USA icon on holes six, seven, eight and 11 in Virginia, never giving her opponent a second to breathe.

Hull also emerged victorious from her Saturday foursomes partnership with rookie Esther Henseleit, with another victory coming alongside Georgia Hall in the fourballs.

It was, however, the hosts who went into Sunday well on top, with Stacy Lewis guiding her USA side to a 10-6 Solheim Cup lead.

Laura Davies ‘can’t believe’ Charley Hull’s major record

Hull quickly reduced that deficit in the opening match, much to the delight and now shock of Team Europe vice-captain Dame Laura Davies.

“I can’t believe she’s not already [a major champion], as she’s so talented,” Davies told Sky Sports News. “It’s not easy to win major championships, we all know that, but that’s what we’d hope for her because she’s that good.

“She just needs to win more tournaments and get herself into contention more. I know she’s up there a fair bit and she has lots of close calls in majors, the US Women’s Open and the AIG Women’s Open last year, but you feel it has to happen at some point.

“She has been superb this week. She turned up, she has been great fun and has been keeping us all entertained, but then she produced on the course as well – you can’t ask for more as a team-mate than that.”

Team Europe pull off Charley Hull masterstroke over Nelly Korda

Team Europe captain Suzann Pettersen and her vice-captains certainly didn’t get every decision right at the Solheim Cup.

Golf fans criticised European captain Pettersen after she ignored Leona Maguire in both Saturday sessions.

But the visiting team did make the right call with Hull on Sunday, with the English star breezing past Korda to put blue on the board early on.

Davies has now shared the reasoning behind that decision, saying: “We knew Nelly was going as No 1 and we had no qualms about putting Charley out first.

“You can’t intimidate Nelly as world No 1, but we thought she was the one who could put a little bit of pressure on she didn’t want.

“Charley did that. Her shot making was superb and the way she finished off her match at the 14th was just magnificent.”
