When Bryson DeChambeau won the US Open in dramatic fashion at Pinehurst, it appeared to be a massive victory for LIV Golf as it continues to try and attract fans in a world where the PGA Tour still retains so much power.

Bryson DeChambeau was not the first LIV Golf player to win a major since his move, of course, but the 30-year-old continued his remarkable year in the game’s four biggest events, having already registered his best ever finishes at The Masters and the PGA Championship in the months prior. He was one putt away from being in a play-off with Xander Schauffele at Valhalla.

It did appear that DeChambeau could rival Scottie Scheffler for being the best player of 2024 had he then won The Open Championship. However, he would prove to be one of several big names to miss the cut at Royal Troon.

LIV Golf stars criticised after 2024 major season

Along with DeChambeau, many outstanding players now play on LIV, including Jon Rahm, Cameron Smith, Brooks Koepka and Dustin Johnson. With that, golf writer Kyle Porter has told Fried Egg Golf that he was baffled to see so many poor performances in the majors this year.

“I’m glad you brought up LIV, one of my takeaways from this year was their players sucked at majors, outside of Bryson. Bryson was awesome, obviously, Bryson was on the verge of having an all-time major year before he missed the cut at The Open Championship,” he said.

“But other than Bryson; Cam Smith, DJ, Louis, Brooks was very mediocre for him, Rahm was bad, and that’s kind of weird to me because the talent, I think, is there at the top, right, but none of those guys performed.”

How LIV’s top players fared in the majors in 2024

Jon Rahm

Those who expected Rahm’s move to LIV Golf to move the needle have probably been surprised by the Spaniard’s lack of success in the majors this year. The high point came at The Open where he managed to finish inside the top 10, but his Masters title defence came to nothing and he missed the cut at the PGA Championship.

Joaquin Niemann

One of LIV’s real success stories on its own tour, Joaquín Niemann was involved in three majors this year, making the cut at all three. He just missed out on the top 20 at The Masters, while he was tied for 58th at Troon.

Tyrrell Hatton

Tyrrell Hatton has enjoyed an impressive debut year on LIV, and finished in the top 10 at The Masters. He missed the cut at The Open after reasonable finishes at both the PGA Championship and US Open.

Cameron Smith

Much like Hatton, Cameron Smith finished in the top 10 at Augusta National and missed the cut in the final major of the year. He also found himself in the middle of the park for the other two majors.

Brooks Koepka

The major championship specialist does deserve credit for making the cut at all four majors this year, but there were few moments when he looked to be in the mix to add a sixth major title to his resume in 2024.
