Keegan Bradley is the Ryder Cup captain, but all the signs are pointing towards him playing at Bethpage Black as well.

Bradley has been in superb form this season, so much so that it has created somewhat of a problem ahead of the Ryder Cup.

Harris English was the latest American player to back Bradley to play at the Ryder Cup.

Bradley has always insisted that he will not stand down as Ryder Cup captain, so if he qualifies for the team it means that he will be the first American playing captain at the Ryder Cup since Arnold Palmer did it in 1963.

Is there scope for the 39-year-old from Vermont to captain the team and play at the same time though?

Those on the European side of the Atlantic think it will be a big mistake if he does.

Keegan Bradley tipped to give up the Ryder Cup captaincy

Most Americans on tour have tipped Bradley to play at the Ryder Cup in September.

However, nobody has been brave enough to come out and say he should relinquish his captaincy duties, until now that is.

Paul McGinley and Rich Beem discussed what might happen with Bradley at Bethpage Black in September, during Sky Sports’ broadcast of The Open in the UK.

And Beem offered an opinion that has rarely been heard from other Americans so far.

McGinley: “Do you see him as a playing captain then Beemer?”

Beem: “I see him playing.”

McGinley: “What’s the word in America, do people think he’s going to be a playing captain?”

Beem: ”I don’t think he’s the captain. I think he’s going to play and be with the team.”

McGinley: “ Maybe hand over the captaincy then?”

Beem: “Yes.”

Considering Bradley’s fine form, it would feel like a huge waste if he didn’t play at the Ryder Cup.

And if he does indeed play, the only question that remains is: will he give up his captaincy duties?

Beem thinks so but all the noise coming out of the U.S. Ryder Cup camp suggests the opposite.
