Justin Thomas revealed in his press conference before the Memorial Tournament that he recently gave some advice to Lexi Thompson’s caddie.

Thompson is currently preparing for the US Women’s Open at Erin Hills, where Thomas played the US Open in 2017.

The course is new to the LPGA players, so it makes sense for caddies to seek a second opinion ahead of arguably the biggest week in female professional golf.

Thompson will be pleased to hear that Thomas thinks she should have “a big advantage” over her competitors this week.

Justin Thomas shares Erin Hills advice with Lexi Thompson before US Women’s Open

Lexi’s caddie (and brother), Curtis, reached out to Thomas to ask how to navigate the challenging golf course at Erin Hills.

JT’s advice wasn’t anything mind-blowing, but it probably gave the Thompsons a little more clarity regarding course management before the event starts on Thursday.

“Hit it as far as you can and high,” he shared before the PGA Tour’s Memorial Tournament. “I was actually talking to Curtis Thompson a little; he’s caddying for Lexi [Thompson], and he texted me a couple of weeks ago asking about it.

“He said the same thing, like any advice, and I’m like, ‘just tell Lexi to be Lexi. Just send a driver.’ They’re big fairways. The golf course was very un-US Open-like, in my opinion, just with how the fairways were so big and some of the greens were big.

“It was a totally different look and setup, but it required, or I felt like, if you put the driver in your hand, if you drove the ball well and further, at least for the tees and kind of distances set up on some holes, you would have a huge advantage.

“So somebody like Lexi, who is on the longer side of her competitors, it could be a big advantage. So I would look for a longer hitter or a girl who could put a little more height under their irons to probably be successful.”

Thompson’s average driving distance on the LPGA in 2025 is 267.89 yards. This only ranks 54th out of 150 players, so she might not have the advantage that Thomas expects.

What happened when Erin Hills hosted the US Open?

The 2017 US Open at Erin Hills experienced lower scoring than most US Opens. Brooks Koepka won the event at 16 under par.

Brian Harman, Hideki Matsuyama, and Tommy Fleetwood were among the seven total players on at least 10 under par for the tournament.

PlacePlayerScoreTo Par
1Brooks Koepka67-70-68-67=272−16
T2Brian Harman67-70-67-72=276−12
Hideki Matsuyama74-65-71-66=276
4Tommy Fleetwood67-70-68-72=277−11
T5Rickie Fowler65-73-68-72=278−10
Bill Haas72-68-69-69=278
Xander Schauffele66-73-70-69=278

This feeds into Thomas’ recollection that the golf course was “un-US Open-like” because it’s meant to be the greatest test in American golf.

Koepka was obviously an exceptional driver of the ball, but Harman, Matsuyama, and Fleetwood’s inclusions in the top five suggest that iron play and short game are more important at Erin Hills.
