On his day, Justin Thomas is one of the best players in the world.

However, Thomas may well struggle to even contend at the US Open at Oakmont next month.

Thomas has already spoken about how thick the rough is at Oakmont, and the Henry Fownes design is expected to provide one of the toughest challenges of all time at the US Open.

The 32-year-old American has been in fine form in general on the PGA Tour this season.

However, he missed the cut last time out at the PGA Championship.

He snapped his three-year winless drought with a victory at the RBC Heritage in April, but his form has tailed off somewhat since then.

So is he really capable of bouncing back and contending at Oakmont next month?

Thomas is a really well-rounded golfer.

His iron play is exceptional when he’s on his best form, whilst his chipping and pitching is up there with the very best in the world.

Thomas is a very good putter when he gets hot as well.

However, there is one big problem that keeps letting him down, especially when it really matters.

The two-time major champion has been driving the ball extremely poorly of late. In fact, he has never been the best driver of the golf ball.

Whilst JT is fairly long off the tee – he has averaged around 305 yards this season – he is severely lacking in the accuracy department.

And poor driving really won’t be conducive to succeeding at the US Open at Oakmont. He may well head into the tournament as one of the favourites but as things stand, he’s a long way away from being ready to challenge.

Justin Thomas’s PGA Tour driving stats

Thomas has won an event this season, so it’s hard to be too critical of him.

However, his driving stats make for pretty grim reading.

Here are his driving numbers from the 2025:

PGA Tour Statistical categoryJustin Thomas’s 2025 rank
Strokes gained off the tee100th
Total driving 67th
Driving distance55th
Driving accuracy111th

Unless he improves drastically on those stats over the course of the next week or so then there is absolutely no way he will have any chance at all to win the US Open.

Oakmont is an incredibly stringent examination, and if Thomas is even slightly off his game with his driver, he will do well to just make the cut.
