Justin Thomas experienced a really challenging US Open campaign at Oakmont last week.

In fact, Thomas has been on somewhat of a downward spiral since he won the RBC Heritage at Harbour Town Golf Links back in April.

The 32-year-old struggled badly at Oakmont last week, carding two rounds of 76 to miss the cut at the US Open by five strokes.

Thomas was spotted practicing on the range at Oakmont after he had missed the cut – he is certainly never found wanting in the work ethic department.

However, he does have some real issues that he needs to address.

After his second round on Friday, Thomas admitted that his performances in majors haven’t been good enough.

Now the challenge for him will be to try and rediscover his best form for the final 10 weeks of the season.

‘Disturbing’ Justin Thomas stat emerges after the US Open

Thomas was fighting with his game in every single department at Oakmont last week.

He ranked 83rd in strokes gained off the tee and 116th in strokes gained approach to the greens.

He was 128th in scrambling and 70th in putting, so it’s easy to see why he wasn’t even close to making the cut at the US Open.

There is a wider concern about the 16-time PGA Tour winner’s game though, aside from his poor performance at Oakmont.

Dan Rapaport highlighted how Thomas has now missed seven cuts in the last 13 major championships he has played.

“JT is going to be frustrated with his play this week. I think it’s fair to be concerned about Justin Thomas in the majors. So, JT entered the major season playing great, top five player in the world on data golf and the world rankings. He seemed to have turned the corner. He entered the Masters after a runner-up finish to Viktor Hovland, but he never featured at Augusta, he finished tied for 36th. But he bounced back big time, he won the RBC Heritage the next week, his first signature event win, his first win since the 2022 PGA Championship win. Then. He finished second at his next start at the Truist.

“So he entered Quail Hollow as a big favourite. He missed the cut that week in Charlotte and he missed it again this week at Oakmont.

“And this is a disturbing stat. JT has played 13 major championships since he won his second PGA at Southern Hills, and he has missed the cut in seven of them. That is simply not good enough for a player of his calibre. He knows that a player like him is going to be judged ultimately by the majors and he’s putting up way too many stinkers in them.”

Thomas making just six of his last 13 cuts is a really poor effort, and that will be something he is desperate to change over the course of the next few years.

Thomas’s best finishes in major Champions since PGA win in 2022

The two-time major champion has performed extremely poorly in the biggest tournaments over the past three years.

He has just one top-10 finish in the majors since his victory at Southern Hills in 2022.

MajorFinish
2024 PGA ChampionshipT-8
2024 Open ChampionshipT-31
2025 MastersT-36
2022 US OpenT-37

Those numbers make for really worrying reading for the 32-year-old and his fans.

Thomas was clearly nowhere near his best during the US Open at Oakmont last week, and he has to get to the bottom of why he is struggling so badly.

Improving his driving and scrambling around the greens would be a good place to start.

Thomas is ranked 95th and 127th in strokes gained off the tee and scrambling respectively this season, and that is simply not good enough for a player of his calibre.
