Justin Rose and Tommy Fleetwood are very close friends off the golf course, so it wasn’t much of a surprise when the Englishman waited around to watch his fellow countryman finish up his round at the Tour Championship.

Rose got the better of Fleetwood in Memphis at the FedEx St. Jude Championship two weeks ago, and the 34-year-old must have been wondering then if his time would ever come on the PGA Tour.

Well, come it did, and in real style at the East Lake as the seven-time DP World Tour winner walked off with the biggest purse in golf after winning the Tour Championship.

Fleetwood may have opened the floodgates with his Tour Championship win, with many more PGA Tour victories surely now on the horizon for him.

It did not go unnoticed that Fleetwood, and Englishman playing in America, was the fan favourite at East Lake.

That says so much about how popular he is, not just in his home country, but across the other side of the Atlantic Ocean as well.

Rose and Fleetwood vacationed together the week before the Fed St. Jude.

The 2013 US Open champion then produced the goods in Memphis immediately after their break together, and Fleetwood had a front row seat in the final group.

Perhaps that inspired him to go on and secure his first ever PGA Tour win.

Fleetwood has often spoken about how he looks up to Rose and the example set by the 12-time PGA Tour winner could well have helped his good friend get over the line in Atlanta on Sunday.

Rose was clearly delighted to see Fleetwood win at East Lake, and he waited to see him finish off his round.

However, the 45-year-old took to social media to congratulate his buddy as well.

Fleetwood will have loved seeing all of the congratulatory messages he received on social media on Sunday night, but perhaps Rose’s would have meant the most to him.

Tommy Fleetwood and Justin Rose’s careers compared

Who knows? Perhaps Fleetwood will go on to emulate Rose by racking up double-digit PGA Tour wins.

He will certainly have the belief now that he can do exactly that.

Here are the two players’ career stats on the PGA Tour:

AchievementsFleetwoodRose
Events played164445
Wins112
Top-5s3173
Top-10s45117
Cuts made140347
Money earned$43,430,669$73,736,017

Rose has a hall of fame career – one that Fleetwood would do very well to match.

However, as Rich Beem suggested on Sunday night, the 34-year-old will now have a different level of confidence every time he tees it up.

Don’t be surprised if he wins many, many more tournaments on the PGA Tour over the next few years.
