It was perhaps the return to the PGA Tour for Jordan Spieth which everyone should have expected at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, with the three-time major champion finishing in a tie for 69th.

Despite not playing competitively for months, Jordan Spieth was one of the players fans would have been most excited to see at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am after he brought an early end to his 2024 season by undergoing surgery on the wrist which plagued him for several years.

From the outside, there was always likely to be a question mark over how Spieth would fare upon his return. Clearly, the Texan is already on his way to enjoying one of the all-time great careers if he can rediscover his early form. However, it has been a long time since Spieth was at that level.

The good and bad parts of his game were on show at Pebble Beach and Spyglass Hill this past week, with a third round 79 being followed by a final day 67. Only a handful of players had a better Sunday than the 31-year-old.

But it is arguably most important that his wrist caused him no issues. Unfortunately, there is one shot which he is not entirely comfortable with just yet.

Speaking to No Laying Up ahead of the tournament, Spieth was asked if he had any new shots in the arsenal. And he highlighted the work he still has to do.

“The one shot that kind of sucks still is the real open-faced flick out of the sand. I can still feel that a little in the wrist. But I’ve worked it a lot because I want to work through some, especially in the last month or so,” he said.

“Other than that, no. I got a lot of chipping work in because I could chip and putt before I was cleared to swing, and it was nice out. But then, once the winter hit, we had a tough winter in the last month or so in Dallas.”

How Jordan Spieth performed at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am as he returned to the PGA Tour

Spieth’s statistics across the week arguably tell the story of someone who is going to be rusty for a little while as they dust off the cobwebs. He was between 50th and 70th in each of the strokes gained categories for the four rounds.

Meanwhile, he made three sand saves from nine attempts – putting him down in a tie for 63rd across the week.

If Spieth is not feeling any pain, then he will be content with his work across the week. Making a return after a long lay-off in a signature event at Pebble Beach is a fairly daunting prospect, particularly when the weather turns. And there were some promising signs.

But it remains to be seen if Spieth can put his injury problems completely behind him. It would certainly be a big boost for the PGA Tour if he is able to return to the summit of the golfing world in the future.
