It wasn’t to be for Jordan Spieth at the Cognizant Classic as he left himself with just too much to do to catch the leaders in the final round.
Spieth played well in Sunday’s final round to finish at 14 under for the tournament after his final round of three under kept him in some form of contention.
After missing out on the Arnold Palmer Invitational, eyes were on Spieth and fellow big name Rickie Fowler to see if they could win the Cognizant Classic and secure a place at Bay Hill.
It wasn’t to be. But despite coming up short, Spieth was in a confident mood heading into some big signature events.

Jordan Spieth reacts after failing to win at The Cognizant Classic
Spieth was speaking to the media in the aftermath of his final round and was quickly asked about where he sees his game right now.
And despite not quite winning out in Florida, Spieth is pleased with how things are going.
“Yeah, it was a lot like Phoenix. I’m shocked at…I get that the overseed was there and the wind was down, but it’s still a stressful golf course, and this was some of the best golf I’ve seen played relative to what I would have thought would have happened on a golf course in quite a while,” Spieth said.
“If you had told me 14-under at the beginning of the week, I would have shook your hand and gone home. It may be even top 10. It’s crazy good golf out there.
“I feel like I’m trending in the right direction. I feel like I played better than I did in Phoenix. Phoenix is a better fit for me, I think, maybe. I just throw out Torrey Pines because I did what I always do there. It’s really not a great judge on where I’m at.”
Jordan Spieth costs himself in round two at the Cognizant Classic
To win any golf tournament, you have to put together four solid rounds and unfortunately, Jordan Spieth didn’t quite manage it.
Indeed, Spieth’s second round was miserable, with the stats showing he lost more than two shots to the field when it came to his approach play.
| Strokes gained category | Jordan Spieth’s second round | Field rank |
| Off the tee | 0.843 | 29th |
| Approach | -2.172 | 130th |
| Around the green | 0.627 | 37th |
| Putting | 0.182 | 64th |
| Total | -0.521 | T73rd |
Ultimately, that is not good enough and you cannot expect to win golf tournaments on the PGA Tour with such a statistic.
Spieth looked in good form in the main but to get back to winning ways, he has plenty of work to do.
