Jordan Spieth admits he made the biggest mistake possible at the US Open and did something he never should have

Jordan Spieth will be hoping to snap a three-year winless run at the Travelers Championship this week, after a frustrating four days at the US Open.

It’s incredible to think that a player with the calibre of Spieth has not won an event since the RBC Heritage in April 2022.

He looked very good at times during the US Open, but he made too many mistakes to contend in the end.

The 31-year-old is definitely not the same player he was 8-10 years ago when he was regularly winning majors.

However, there are signs that the 13-time PGA Tour winner is getting back to somewhere near his best.

Spieth has suggested that he believes he can become the world number once again at some point in the near future.

However, the harsh reality is that he is nowhere near the level required to do that right now.

Oakmont was a really unforgiving golf course last week.

Any mistakes were severely punished, and Spieth was a victim of that on numerous occasions.

However, how does the man himself think his own game is shaping up right now?

Spieth responded when asked to assess the current state of his game.

He said, “I’m pleased with most everything. I’m just kind of — I feel like I’m getting done with the round and my scoring is — a couple times during the week, there’s just kind of two shots that I’m like, man, if I just played two strokes better today. Normally that comes down to capitalizing on the short game stuff, taking advantage of easy holes, making putts.

“Last week I had a lot of momentum, and then I made a triple with just making a mistake on a couple putts, hitting them a little bit too hard where I wanted to make the par, didn’t want to make the bogey. I held patient all week and made the one U.S. Open mistake you can’t make, which is to try to do something a little special.

“Other weeks it’s, man, I felt like I hit a good tee shot, and I missed it by five yards, I missed it by three, something like that, where there was a stroke or two difference.

“It feels like I just need to stay the course and good things are coming. I think the biggest thing for me right now is not trying — it’s going to be harder and harder as we get to the end of the season to try to force results given I only have however many events left now. I don’t have the runway that you had in February.

“So if it all comes together by the end of the season, great. If not, it’s already been pretty much a better season, you know, on the better end of what I could have asked for coming off surgery and starting late into the season.

“I’m looking forward to this week. This is a big week. The Open is a big week. Then look to the playoffs, and there’s a chance I’d add an event somewhere. I’m not sure. It will just kind of depend on the standings because the idea is to make it to East Lake.“

There have been some really positive signs for Spieth so far in 2025, despite the fact that he is still yet to win.

As you can see from the numbers above, Spieth is producing similar numbers to 2022 and 2023 when he was contending far more.

The three-time major champion has to find a way to improve his putting, especially from inside five feet, where he is ranked 192nd on the PGA Tour.

That’s simply not acceptable for a player of his calibre.

And if he manages to do just that, it will surely only be a matter of time before Spieth wins on the PGA Tour again.
