Jon Rahm shocked by what Sergio Garcia said about Valderrama during round one of LIV Andalucía

Jon Rahm and Sergio Garcia had differing fortunes during round one of LIV Andalucía as they both battled with the tricky Valderrama conditions.

The course in Spain is known as one of the toughest on the circuit and scoring was tough in the main, albeit Dean Burmester managed an impressive 5-under.

For Rahm and Garcia, things didn’t get quite that good.

Garcia used his knowledge and experience of the course to card a steady two-under, while Rahm struggled a bit and carded a round of two-over.

For Rahm, the windy conditions of Valderrama and the tricky landing spots off the tee ensured a tough day at the office.

However, things could get even tougher for Rahm, if what Sergio Garcia has told him is to come true.

Speaking to the media afterwards, Rahm was pressed on a comment from Garcia in which he’d apparently suggested to Rahm that the course wasn’t playing too hard.

And Rahm admitted he was shocked that things could get even tougher around Valderrama.

“Yeah, I think we were walking down, think it was the 4th tee, and he says ‘oh the golf course is showing some teeth today’ and my reaction was like ‘SOME TEETH?!‘. I think it’s more than that,” Rahm said.

“Can it be more difficult? Yes, everything can be more difficult but I think this is up there with as hard as it can get.

“But when you’ve played as much as he has here, I think this is his 17th start I believe and if I’m not mistaken I think he used to practice here quite a bit so he’s seen it all but today was a pretty hard day.”

With the Scottish Open going on as well on the DP and PGA Tours this weekend, both courses have the potential to be influenced by the wind.

So far, Scotland has remained relatively calm and it’s over in Spain where the conditions are tougher.

Rahm, then, will need to find his best form to ensure he’s in the mix to win come Sunday.
